In Memory of
David L. Doss
-

David L. Doss passed away on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at the age of 90. He was born on December 12, 1926 in Highlands, Texas to Minor and Annie Doss and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown, Texas. After high school David attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1949. In that same year he wed his sweetheart, Mary Berryman Doss, and together they embarked on a remarkable life and marriage that would endure for more than 67 wonderful years. Early in their marriage, David proudly served in the US Army during the Korean War. Following the war, he pursued a career in accounting and finance. He also continued with his education, earning his Master of Business Administration from the University of Houston and his license as a Certified Public Accountant. David went on to enjoy a long and successful career in the oil and gas industry where he served as a finance executive in several companies. He spent most of his career in Houston, Texas, but also had career stops in New York, Oklahoma City, and Cairo, Egypt.

Outside of work, David had many interests which he pursued with the same zeal that brought him success in his professional life. He was an avid boater and loved to be on or near the water. He enjoyed playing golf, watching sports, and discussing world affairs and politics, which he followed closely. After retiring from his career in the oil and gas business, he acted on his dream of becoming a homebuilder, designing and building several beautiful homes in the Lake Conroe area north of Houston. David’s most passionate interest of all, however, was spending time with his family that he so deeply loved and cherished. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, uncle and family patriarch who gave selflessly and generously to others and will be greatly missed.

David is survived by his wife Mary, their children David Jr. (Julie), Joe (Pinko), Shelley Riehl (John) and three grandchildren. He is also survived by his niece Mary Berryman Denney (Richard) and nephew Robert Berryman (Patricia) – both of whom David helped raise following the death of their mother – and their children. In addition, he is survived by his sister Evelyn Hoffman (Louis) and their children.

A small memorial service for family will be held on Friday, February 3, 2017 at 1:00 pm in the chapel at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive. Following the service, a reception and celebration of David’s life for all friends and family will be held from 2:00 – 5:00 pm at the Huntwick Racquet Club, 5300 Coral Gables Drive.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in David’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org) or the American Heart Association (heart.org).

I know that my mother , if she could express her thoughts here, would say how much she enjoyed the friendship and good times with MG and Dave. She spoke often of both of you and though I knew you both better over the last few years, I certainly looked forward to being with you on every occasion. I convey heartfelt condolences from both of us.
