Jonathan and I met in a local church youth group. One of the first times that we hung out was at a retreat --- somewhere around Huntsville, I think. We had a blast !!! They had a good-sized lake and some of the boys, including Jonathan, headed out with canoes, paddles and fishing gear. Well, as you might expect with teenage boys, it wasn’t long before a water fight ensued. The boys, the canoes, the paddles and the fishing gear all ended up in the water! There was a mad scramble to make it back to the shore. I remember seeing Jonathan dump all the water out of his boots with a huge smile on his face. He was loving it. It was Action and Adventure – and he loved that stuff.
We were out of touch for many years… then about a year and a half ago… Jonathan reached out to me… and I started coming over to his house for “Movie Nights”. It was wonderful. I brought the pizza and he had the Dr. Pepper. You see, I have two daughters… and there’s only so many princess and pony movies a fella can watch --- before he wants to see some gun fights and car chases. We’d often get in a fight ourselves with an empty Dr. Pepper bottle. He’d wait until I was enthralled with the movie and then peg me with it! I’d throw it back and often it would fly over his head and we’d have mad dash to see who could get it first! Yep, it was Action and Adventure – and we loved that stuff.
Wait, no… that’s not right. Don’t get me wrong… Jonathan liked the Action and Adventure a whole lot. But ‘Love’ is not the right word for that. Love is what he showed us. The kindness that he showed to his family and friends. His encouraging text messages. His example of faith… despite all of his obstacles. I am so thankful and blessed to have been able to share such a wonderful friendship here on this earth !!!
I couldn't have a better friend...
God bless you, Jonathan
I love you and
...I can't wait to see you again !!!
