In Memory of
Maria Emma Loaiza
-

Maria Emma Loaiza passed in her sleep on March 31, 2017, in Houston, Texas. She is survived by a son, Humberto Rico, of Houston, and his wife, and a daughter, Maritza Hord, also of Houston, and her husband; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; many cousins, nephews, and nieces in Colombia who loved her dearly; and many friends in Houston and Colombia.

Emma was born December 12, 1926, in Santa Rosa de Cabal, in the Risaralda department in west central Colombia. She lived for many years in Pereira, Colombia. She separated from her husband in Colombia and for the rest of her life assumed the responsibility of caring for her two children alone. She provided housekeeping and childcare services for many years both in Colombia and in the United States. Emma migrated to the United States in 1978. She proudly became a citizen of the United States in 1992.

Despite many disappointments and challenges, Emma remained strong and cheerful her entire 90 years, always ready to laugh with friends and enjoy the life God gave her. For over ten years she volunteered at Mission Bend Elementary, where she was cited for her loving efforts reading to and supporting bilingual children. The children loved her. A lifelong Catholic, Emma attended services and took holy communion whenever she could at a number of churches, including St. Theresa and St. Justin Martyr.

Emma resided at West Oaks Rehabilitation Center the last three years of her life among caring friends, where she was visited almost every day by her daughter.

Beresford Funeral Home is providing for cremation of her body.  A memorial service will be held in the Chapel at St. Justin Martyr Catholic Church, 13350 Ashford Point Drive, Houston, Texas 77082, on Monday, April 3, 2017 at 2:00 pm.
