Hazel (Carter) Whitworth, born in Fresno, California on May 3, 1919 to the late Ivan and Nancy Hood, passed away at age 97 on November 14, 2016.
She received her Registered Nurse degree from St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in San Francisco, California, then her Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist degree from St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, Minnesota. She came to Port Lavaca in 1946 to marry her first husband Curtis, who she met in San Francisco when he was in the U.S Navy during WWII. She was the first anesthetist when Calhoun County Memorial Hospital (now Memorial Medical Center) opened in 1950, and after moving to Houston in 1974, she worked at Heights Hospital in
Hazel was preceded in death by her first husband Curtis Carter Sr., second husband P. G. “Dick” Whitworth, and her brother Layton Hood of Santa Rosa, California. She is survived by a sister Virginia Schmidt of Greeley, Colorado, two sons Curtis Carter Jr. of Port Lavaca, Wayne Carter and wife Lynnette of Deer Park, Texas, four grandchildren Heidi Haight and husband Thomas of Deer Park, Texas, Curtis Carter III and Sonia of Port Lavaca, Adam Carter of Deer Park, Texas, Seth Carter of Deer Park, Texas, and 2 great-grandchildren Jake Carter of Port Lavaca and Cade Carter of Victoria, Texas.
Memorials to First Presbyterian Church or Calhoun County Senior Citizens’ Center, both of Port Lavaca, or donor’s choice.
Following cremation, Hazel’s cremains will be disposed of privately, according to her wishes.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 1111 N. Virginia, Port Lavaca, TX 77979 at 10:00am Saturday, December 3, 2016.

After retiring in 1982 and moving back to Port Lavaca, Hazel and Dick were active volunteers, delivering meals to senior citizens for more than 15 years. At the age of 78, she was honored by the Texas Health Care Association as the 1997 Ombudsman of the Year for her volunteer work at Coastal Healthcare Center. She was a hard worker who cared about people and loved doing for others.
