In Memory of
Marie Annell Stephens
-

Marie Stephens, aged 83, from Rosebud, TX, peacefully passed away on March 31, 2024. Born in Rosebud on July 25, 1940, to Fred Stephens and Louis Gordon, Marie's life was one of remarkable dedication and love.

Marie's journey began with her marriage to her high school sweetheart, Kent Burris. As Kent served in the Air Force, their lives were filled with adventures across various bases in the U.S., raising their two young children. Settling in Baytown, TX, they welcomed three more children into their loving home. Marie devoted herself to raising her five children, serving as a committed stay-at-home mother while also actively participating in Northside Baptist Church as a Sunday School Teacher.

With a passion for soccer, Marie coached and played while tirelessly supporting her children's athletic endeavors. She also showcased her artistic talent through painting, creating stunning portraits. Beyond these pursuits, she wholeheartedly backed her children in music, sports, and every aspiration they pursued.

Upon returning to Rosebud after years in Baytown, Marie embarked on a journey of personal and professional growth. She worked in a local factory, pursued higher education, and became a probation officer, dedicating herself to assisting troubled teens. Her impact on the community extended further as she initiated and managed several small businesses. Though her bid for Mayor fell short by a narrow margin, her influence and respect within the community were undeniable.

Marie's zest for life led her to travel, spending summers working at resorts in Alaska and Yellowstone. Throughout her life, she remained an active and vital presence in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, consistently prioritizing their well-being and imparting Christian values.

In Rosebud, Marie continued her active involvement in New Salem Baptist Church, engaging in outreach activities such as singing and ministering in local prisons and retirement homes, embodying her unwavering faith and compassion.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Fred Stephens and Louis Gordon, as well as her sons Daniel and Nathan Burris, and granddaughter Danielle Renee Burris. These losses left an indelible mark on her heart from which she never fully recovered.

She is survived by her sisters Janet Gracco and Sharen Boles, children Anita Bishop, Brent Burris, and Delia Honovich, grandchildren Reggie Bishop, Cody and Dixie King, Lauren Honovich, Austin and Leanne Barth, Connor and Miranda Woodroff, Robin Barth, Nickolas and Alyssa Burris, and great-grandchildren Kalob Otts, Patton Danielle Burris, Aria Barth, Levvi Barth, along with numerous other cherished family members and friends.

Marie Stephens will be dearly missed, her legacy of love, resilience, and unwavering faith forever remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Services are scheduled for Thursday, April 11, 2024, at New Salem Church in Lott, Texas with the Visitation starting at 1pm, and the Funeral Service starting at 2pm.  The Graveside Service will be held on Friday, April 12, 2024, at Hill of Rest Cemetery in Baytown, Texas at 10am.
