Mary Elizabeth Byrne Michalek

Mary Elizabeth Byrne Michalek, 81, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2020 at her home in Richmond, Texas, surrounded by her family.  She was born on March 22, 1939 in Houston, Texas, to Richard Frank Byrne and Ethel Befeld Byrne.

Mary grew up in southeast Houston and attended San Jacinto High School.  She married her childhood sweetheart, James Richard (“Jimmy”) Michalek on July 16, 1956. 

Mary was a living example of a loving wife, mother, and faithful child of God to her family and all who knew her.  She gave of herself generously and loved unconditionally. 

Mary is survived by her husband of 64 years, Jim Michalek, and their five children:  Tanya Michalek Emmons and her husband, Jim, of Austin, Texas; James Richard Michalek II and his wife, Norma, of Richmond, Texas; Tracy Michalek Durham, of Pearland, Texas; Johnny Michalek, Sr. and his wife, Patti, of Sugar Land, Texas; and Toni Michalek, of Sugar Land, Texas. She was blessed with 17 grandchildren and their spouses:  Jonathan and Heather Emmons, Whitney Emmons and Mike Lazorwitz, Tim and Heather Emmons, Ashley and Bryan Knopp, Kristin and Adam Baird, Catherine Michalek, Jimmy Michalek III and Emeli Mondragon, Stephen Michalek, Allison Michalek,  Larry Durham II, Lindsay and Isaac Streety, Laura Durham Singleton, Landon and Rachael Durham, Molly and Trey Englert, Johnny and Lacey Michalek, Anna and Drew Zizinia, and Brittany and Kevin Kettle.  Mary was further blessed with 28 great-grandchildren; her sister, Kathy Byrne Strickler and husband, Bobby; brother-in-law, Butch Norwood; special cousin, Susan Fonteno; nieces and nephews Sarah Stone, Mike Kliebert, Michelle Black, Karen Medart, and Paul Kliebert, and numerous other extended family members.

Mary also leaves behind her lifelong friends Peggy and Mickey Walker.

Mary was preceded in death by her mother, Ethel Byrne; father, Frank Byrne; brother, Rick Byrne; mother-in-law, Betty Michalek; father-in-law, Mike Michalek; sister-in-law, Carolyn Michalek Norwood; and great-granddaughter, Rebecca Lynn Emmons.

The family wishes to acknowledge and express its gratitude to her loving caregivers, Lupe and Gilbert Aguilar and Janie Campos.

Funeral services will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 507 S. Fourth Street, Richmond, TX  77469 on Friday, December 11, 2020.  Visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.,  Rosary at 11:30 a.m., and Funeral Mass at 12:00 noon. Burial will be at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, TX, 77023 at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or charity of your choice.

So very sorry about the loss of
Wife, Mother and Grandmother Mary Michalek. We found out the day after the funeral and are heartbroken that we didn’t know earlier so that we could have attended her funeral. May God be with you all and may her soul Rest In Peace.
