Mildred Elkins

Friendly, humorous, and a natural teacher are just a few words used to describe Mildred Elkins, who passed away April 15 after a short illness. Born in Houston Heights in 1918, the youngest of 5 children, Mildred graduated from Rice University in 1940. She taught first grade in Houston for over 30 years, and in 1973 earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Sam Houston State University.

A long-time member of the Outdoor Nature Club, Mildred enjoyed bird watching and collecting sea shells. She made many trips to Florida and the Caribbean to bring home shells, and shared her travels with her students.

Mildred loved life and learning new things. At the age of 86, she bought a computer to email her friends and read the news online. Her mind and spirit stayed sharp until the very end.

She is preceded in death by her husband James Elkins, sisters Marie Ross, Helen Eberspacher, Coralie Eberspacher, and Roberta Campbell DeWeese. Survived by daughter Judy Elkins, nieces Margy Ross Williams, Kathy Campbell Fallon and Jan Campbell Lohrenz. Also survived by sisters-in-law Ruth Orr and Dorothy Cox.

The family would like to thank the caregivers Jerika Peters, Brenda Byrd, V’Isha Reed and Pansy Vermon for their loving care and cheerfulness.

Visitation will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday April 20, followed by a memorial service at 4:00. Both services will be held at Christ Church Presbyterian, 5001 Bellaire Bl., Bellaire Texas 77401. A private burial will be held on Thursday.

In memory of Mildred, please consider reading a book to a child or donating to a library.
