In Memory of
Tanya Etta Shorter
-

Tanya Etta Shorter, 53, returned to her heavenly home on November 9, 2015 after a courageous battle with Breast Cancer 3 separate times), Lung Cancer (3 separate times), and Brain Cancer and Tanya was victorious as she remained cheerful, positive and faithfully valiant to the end.

Tanya was born to the late Joseph Shorter Jr. and Eliza Jane Armstead, March 11, 1962 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She grew up with her three older brothers Joe, Don, and Dwight and loved to remind everyone that she was the “Baby” of the family. Tanya graduated from McMain High School in 1980 and later graduated from LSU in 1985 with a degree in Business Administration. During college Tanya pledged to the Pi Sigma Epsilon marketing fraternity along with other close friends. In 2001, Tanya would also graduate from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and would remain a tenacious advocate of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ to everyone she spoke to. Tanya’s faith and firm belief in God’s support would bring her peace as she battled illness after illness.

Tanya’s business career started at Mervyn’s Department Store where she helped open several new stores in New Orleans and California. Tanya joined the US Post Office in New Orleans in 1988 where she worked her way up to Assistant to the Post Master General in Washington, DC. Tanya loved the work she did with the Post Office especially new stamp promotions and special events. Tanya moved to Sugar Land, Texas in 2005 and shortly after retired from the Postal Service and began a career with Mary Kay Cosmetics.

Tanya is remembered by her friends and family as a courageous fighter who knew how to have fun, smile, laugh, and “strike a pose”. She was a compassionate and loyal friend, a woman of faith and a positive role model for all who knew her. She touched many lives for good and will be greatly missed by them all.

Tanya is survived by her brother Joseph Shorter III and his wife Margie and their sons Joseph IIII and Gregory as well as her nephew Jawanza and niece Kimba, children of her late brother and wife, Dwight and Litha Shorter. Tanya is preceded in death by her father Joseph Shorter Jr., her mother Eliza Jane Shorter, and brothers Don Henry Shorter and Dwight Anthony Shorter.

A funeral is scheduled for 11am November 13, 2015 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints 602 Eldridge Rd, Sugar Land, TX, 77478, with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Tanya’s life. Friends and family would like to thank the staff and caregivers of Atria Senior Assisted Living, Altus Hospice, and MD Anderson for their and care and dedication in serving Tanya.
