In Memory of
Carl F. Hodges Jr.
-

Carl Franklin Hodges Jr., of Phoenix, Arizona, went to be with Jesus on Sunday, November 1st in Houston, Texas.

A viewing will be held at Westside Baptist Church (3883 Lakes of Bridgewater Dr. Katy, Texas 77449) on Saturday, November 7th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The Home Going Service will be held at the same location at 1:00 p.m. with an interment following.

Carl Hodges was born to Carl Hodges Sr. And Gertrude Hodges in Phoenix, Arizona on August 31st, 1929.

When Carl was 16 years old, he was approached by a church janitor in Phoenix. The janitor asked him if he knew where he was going when he died some day. That day the janitor was able to lead Carl to the Lord. Praise the Lord for faithful janitors!

Carl spent a year studying architectural engineering at Phoenix College. At a certain point, he dedicated his life to the Lord for full-time ministry and went to Bible college.

He attended Bob Jones University and graduated in 1952. He met his wife, Jean Louise Crocker, while at BJU. They were married in May of 1952 by Dr. Bob Jones Sr.

Carl and Jean spent a couple of years as a youth Pastor in Ohio. After that, they moved to Phoenix, Arizona to become a youth Pastor at a church there. From that ministry, Carl became the area director of Youth for Christ. He took a brave stand against compromise and started his own parallel ministry which he called Truth for Youth. He spent many years in that ministry establishing Bible clubs in high schools around the state, a music ministry, and regular weekly youth rallies. Many people were saved and discipled through that ministry.

Because of his stand against compromise, Bob Jones University conferred upon him an honorary doctorate degree in 1965.

In 1968 Carl took his first pastorate at Dessert Wells Baptist Church in Mesa, Arizona. He pastored there for five years and started a very successful Christian school in connection with the church.

In 1975 he moved to Texas and became the Pastor of North Houston Baptist Church in Houston, Texas. He pastored there for twenty six years. While at North Houston Baptist, Carl started a Christian college which he called Pioneer Baptist Bible College.

After retiring, Carl & Jean moved to be with their daughter and son-in-law at Westside Baptist Church. At that point he moved Pioneer Baptist Bible College to be under the ministry of Westside Baptist Church. The college ministry flourished at Westside Baptist Church in the future years. He was instrumental in training many young men and woman who are in full-time ministry today. Carl was an important part of the ministry at Westside until God took him home this past Sunday.

Carl Hodges was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Louise Crocker Hodges, his father, Carl Franklin Hodges Sr., his mother, Gertrude Kern Hodges, his younger sister, Eva Catherine Hodges, and his older sister, Dorothy Hodges Brewer.

He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Hodges Butts, her husband, Richard Duane Butts, his grandchildren, Richard & Laura Butts, Robert & Bethany Butts, and Jared & Kristi Hammond. His great grandchildren are:
Mark Butts, Robert Butts, Alexis Butts, Elizabeth Butts, Jackson Butts, Grant Hammond, Kara Hammond, &  Lauren Hammond.

Pallbearers will be Richard Butts, Robert Butts, Jackson Butts, Jared Hammond, Mark Butts, Robert Butts, & Grant Hammond.

Memorial Contributions may be given to Westside Baptist Church to aid in sending Carl Hodges’ commentaries of the Bible to missionaries around the world.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Oscar and Idalia Aguirre and Jared Cravens for their special care of our Dad and Grandpa.

The family would also like to thank the Blue Star Hospice and Copperfield Rehab and Healthcare.
