Lifetime Brazoria county resident, John A Follett Jr, passed peacefully from this world on August 16, 2016.
Johnnie was born October 20, 1925 in Houston, TX. As an only son, along with his three sisters, he spent his childhood and high school years in Angleton. Johnnie graduated from Angleton High School in 1943.
He attended Schreiner College prior to enlisting in the United States Marines, where he proudly served from 1944-1946 in Guadalcanal, Luzon, and Mindanao.
After his return from the military, Johnnie married Doris Yockey of Freeport in 1948. Johnnie and Doris lived in Sweeny from 1959 until they moved to Columbia Lakes in 1989. Johnnie was an avid follower of Sweeny Bulldog athletics. He served as an official timer at the Sweeny Bulldog Relays, where he was recognized by the athletic department for fifty years of service. He was an avid outdoorsman who spent much of his time hunting, fishing, and golfing.
He especially loved fishing at San Luis Pass, where there was a great deal of family history dating back to the early years of the Texas Republic.
Johnnie worked at Nalco Chemicals in Freeport for 21 years prior to his retirement in 1985.
Johnnie is survived by his wife of 67 years, Doris Follett. Other survivors include his sister Fannie Mae Gilbert of Lake Jackson, daughter Janis Follett of Houston, Leslie Follett of Sweeny, son Jim Follett and wife Kathy of Angleton, son Pat Follett and wife Karen of Deer Park, and son Mike Follett and wife Gwen of Brazoria. He leaves 12 grandchildren: Seth Chambliss, Jared Chambliss, Gail Thacker, Nolan Follett, Robbin Reininger, Ryan Follett, Allyson Davis, Haley Follett, James Boswell Follett, Travis Price, Shannon Mitchell, and Matthew Whitehead; 15 great-grandchildren: Coby Chambliss, Caleb Chambliss, Cooper Chambliss, Kendall Chambliss, Jocelyn Chambliss, Blaire Follett, Eli Follett, Patrick Davis, Emma Davis, Leila Davis, Will Thacker, Emily Price, Taylor Price, Mandy Price, and Kyler Mitchell; along with a large extended family and many nieces and nephews.
Johnnie was preceded in death by his father John Alexander Follett, his mother Fannie Ryan Follett, his sister Mildred Easton, and his sister Mary Catherine Brown.
Visitation will be held Thursday August 18 from 6-8 pm at Beresford Funeral Services 13501 Alief Clodine Road Houston, TX 77082. A Rosary and Funeral Mass will be held at St Philip’s Catholic Church located at 304 W. Church Street in El Campo, TX 77437 on Friday August 19. Rosary will begin at 10:30 am, followed by Mass at 11:00. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Memorial Park Cemetery in El Campo, TX.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association - Houston & Southeast Texas, or to American Legion Post 0503 of West Columbia, TX.
