Susan "Sue" Lynn Coffman

Susan "Sue" Lynn Coffman, 73, of Houston, Texas passed away on August 10, 2026 in her Houston home of 35 years.

Born in Ohio on July 24, 1953, to Trudy and Joe Thorn, the family moved to Cherry Hill, New Jersey when Sue was 12 years old, with her older brother Peter, sister Kristi, and younger brother Rob. Sue met her future husband, Bill Coffman, at Cherry Hill High School at age 16. Around the same time, she began developing her love of international folk dance by sneaking out of the house to attend classes in Philadelphia. An adventurous spirit, she started college at Drew University in 1971, but soon dropped out to explore Europe and Asia, travelling from Germany to India with her best friend Jill, working in hotels along the way. After her international adventures, she moved back to New Jersey, and eventually found her way back to Bill in Colorado, where they began new adventures together. They were married in 1983 and had their first child, Max. Shortly after, Sue received her bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. In 1989 the family moved to Houston to be closer to Bill's parents and had their second child, Molly.

Throughout the years, Sue threw herself whole-heartedly into many fun community events and activities. Dancing was her biggest hobby and passion (folk dancing, swing dancing, country dancing, zydeco, contra dancing, to name a few). She also enjoyed weekly Mahjong nights with the Mahjong Mavens, attending exercise classes at the YMCA, where she made many good friends, and in retirement, volunteering as an usher. She became a Texas Master Naturalist in 2024 and loved spending time tending to her organic garden, as well as helping to develop a new organic garden at Memorial Assistance Ministries. She was an energetic and caring social butterfly who never met a stranger, and she was so loved by her friends, family, and community.  

Sue is survived by her husband, Bill, her children, Max and Molly, Max's husband David, and many beloved friends and family. 

A Celebration of Life will be held at First Lutheran Church at 1311 Holman, Houston, Texas at 6:30 pm on Friday August 28, followed by folk dancing at 7:30 pm.
