Dawn was born on March 15, 1965 and passed away August 14, 2010, taking her last breath around 7:15 AM in the company of her husband Doug after a near lifelong bout with cancer and various complications. She is survived by her father Jack Ray, brother Steven Ray and wife Lynn, sister Barbara Craig and husband Len, and sister Kathleen Reich and husband Harry. She was pre-deceased by her mother Vera Ray.
Dawn’s extended family include Doug’s parents, Ozzie and Charlie Laake, his brother Gerald and wife Cathy Laake, his sister Sandra and husband Bobby Jack Johnson, and his brother Kenneth Laake. Nieces and nephews include Zachary, Seth and Jared Laake, Sam and Jack Johnson, Payden and Justin Laake, Jeff and Kevin Craig, Kimberley Anderson and Adam Rodriguez.
A huge Arkansas Razorback fan, Dawn graduated high school from Fountain Lake in Hot Springs in 1983, and then attended and graduated from The University of Arkansas in 1988 with a B.S. in History. She then took a job at Sam Houston State University, where she met the love of her life Douglas Oliver Laake. They were married on June 1, 1991.
Dawn completed paralegal school in 1996 and spent the next 10 years in the legal profession. She worked as a compliance officer until illness prevented her from working at the level she was accustomed.
In 2008, Dawn began the steps to become a Roman Catholic. She received Holy Confirmation and Holy Communion on Palm Sunday in 2009. She was an inspiration to many in the church and in her life due to her cheerful attitude and determination displayed during her illness.
Rosary Service will be held on Wednesday August 18, from 6 PM until 8 PM at the St. Laurence Catholic Church in the Devine Mercy Chapel. The Church is located at 3100 Sweetwater Boulevard in Sugarland, Texas.
Memorial Mass will be held at St. Laurence Church at 10 AM on Thursday, August 19, 2010.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the St. Laurence Social Concerns Ministry, which was very near to Dawn’s heart.
