Henry Edward “Sonny” Nemec passed peacefully in Houston on Feb 3, 2016 in Houston, TX. at the age of 88.
Henry is survived by son Larry Nemec and wife Paulette of Fulshear, TX. Grandchildren Sarah Nemec-Nelson and husband Roice of Austin, TX. Larrie Nemec of Houston, TX. He is preceded in death by parents Henry and Evelyn Nemec of Clodine, TX., son James Henry Nemec of Clodine, TX. and sister Georgia Lee Nemec of Brehnam, TX.
Henry was born at home on September 30, 1927 in Alief to Henry and Evelyn Nemec. He graduated from Missouri City High School and attended Texas A&M University. After serving his country in the US Army in World War II and the US Air Force in Korea he married Billie Momeny and settled in Alief where he was Post Master and later Business Manager / Tax Assessor of Alief Independent School District. The couple welcomed two sons into their home and set about teaching them the values of faith in God, hard work and love of country. His children remember him as a firm but loving and patient father who encouraged them to pursue their goals.
Following retirement from Alief ISD Henry was an accomplished entrepreneur, real estate broker, and oil and gas producer. He was a generous individual who supported many charitable causes and who was passionate about his church, serving many terms as the church board president. He was an active and dedicated member of the Westheimer Community Church (formerly Alief Brethren Church) and volunteered in leadership with the Boy Scouts of America. Henry served on the Board of Directors of several Water District Boards and financial institutions. He was recently honored by the Texas Real Estate Commission for fifty years as a Texas Real Estate Broker. He understood the importance of education and was appointed and served on a special commission for education by former Texas Governor Mark White.
A graveside service is scheduled for 10:30AM Monday February 8, 2016 at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery, with a celebration of his life to follow at Westheimer Community Church. I got to know Henry through my parents many years ago and even today when I smell a certain brand of pipe tobacco I look around to see if it is him. He was there through some good times and bad times with my family and I am eternally grateful for his kindness and the sincere Southern Gentleman he was. Every time I was back in Houston, would drive by the old store and house laughing that it all grew up around him and he was the last hold out in the area. The house and store should be preserved as a historical place to maintain the history and memories of Clodine that Henry was so much a part of preserving.
