In Memory of

-

Shirley Phelps passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 17th, 2014. She is survived by her son, Leslie Phelps, daughter in law, Rocio Phelps and her sister, Florence Monfore. She has four grandchildren, Nicole Phelps, Craig Phelps, Michelle Phelps and Rina Lukes.

Shirley Garner was born in Kelso, Washington on 5/23/1932 and married at the age of 18 to Dale Phelps in June of 1950. They remained happily married for 55 years raising two children, Laura and Les, before Dale passed on because of a heart attack in March, 2005. Laura Phelps, her daughter preceded her in February 2011 after a long battle with cancer.

Shirley and Dale had traveled the world extensively even living in exotic locations like Okinawa and France while Dale was in the military before settling in Fairbanks, Alaska in 1966. Shirley was a seamstress by trade while younger and a master quilter who served as a past president of Cabin Fever Quilting Guild. She and her daughter Laura were very active in various quilting groups, including Quilting in the Snow and Thimble Thursdays. She exhibited many quilts over the years and was very prolific in making quilts for fire victims via the Red Cross and the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital for those who had lost babies. She earned an MBA and a CPA while working for many years in accounting at the University of Alaska.

The funeral Mass will be at St. Anthony of Padua, in the Woodlands, Texas next Tuesday, 12/23 at 11:00 AM with a reception following at the Black Walnut Cafe.

Shirley was one of the friendliest and most down to earth quilters in our guild, and I was delighted to get to know her through the Tuesday quilting group. She taught me a lot, in particular how to make string bags. I can't imagine how many she made. Many, many lives were enriched through her generosity and service.
