In Memory of
Ethel Mae McKenzie
-

Ethel O’Neal McKenzie was born on November 17, 1917 in Brooksville, Florida as the ninth child of Charlie and Mary Holley O’Neal.  In the mid 1930’s, Ms. McKenzie married the late Samuel Andrew Johnson in Brooksville, Florida and later moved to Lakeland, Florida were she resided for over 60 years. While in Lakeland, Ethel McKenzie served the Lord faithfully and diligently as an active member of the Stewardess Board as well as other boards and committees at New Bethel A.M.E. Church for over 50 years. In addition, she married the late Reverend Luther McKenzie.

In 2005, Ethel moved to Houston, Texas to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren and resided there until her passing on October 5th, 2012.

Ethel McKenzie possessed a very bold and tenacious character and in her 94 years, she never met a stranger. Furthermore, Ethel was an avid and skilled checkers player; and if you ever came to visit, you could not leave unless you first engaged her in a game.

To the end, she was loved, cherished and will fondly be remembered as a Mother to a loving daughter, Grandmother to four grandchildren, Great-grandmother to two great-grandchildren, Aunt to a host of nieces and nephews, as well as a Friend, Family Historian, and skilled Sportswoman in the game of checkers.

Grandma...You are loved, cherished, and remembered fondly. Holidays will not be the same without your checkers tournaments, but I know you probably have already set one up in Heaven...take it easy on them!

Love,

Shemah B.

Grandma McKenzie, it was a pleasure getting to know you and listening to your stories. I truly enjoyed the times that we spent together. I know that you are sitting at God's right hand and that you are suffering no more. Until we meet again....
