In Memory of
Joseph Daniel Meyer
-

Joseph Daniel “JD” Meyer, 86, of Sugar Land, Texas, passed away peacefully at home on May 9, 2026, surrounded by his family.

JD was born on September 26, 1939, to Hertha and Otto Meyer at Laura Eldridge Hospital in Sugar Land. He graduated from Sugar Land High School in 1958, where he met Melinda Summers and the rest, as they say, is history. They were married in 1962 at St. Anne Catholic Church in Houston and shared a remarkable 64-year journey together.
JD graduated from the University of Houston in 1963, becoming the first member of his family to pursue education beyond the eighth grade. He and Melinda welcomed their daughter, JoAnna, in 1964, and their son, John Randolph, in 1968.  After college, JD began his career with Wohlt Electric and went on to spend more than 50 years in Houston as a design-build estimator specializing in commercial and light industrial electrical construction. He earned the respect of colleagues and clients through his expertise, integrity, and strong work ethic.

Throughout his life, JD found purpose in hard work, whether on the job, at home, or helping friends and family. He was happiest solving problems, fixing things, and sharing his skills with others. Family members still tell the story of the vacation when he rewired an 80-year-old house in a small New Mexico town simply because it needed to be done.  In 2007, JD and Melinda returned to Sugar Land and built a home on the land where he had grown up. After retiring from electrical estimating, he continued working until 2025 in the electrical department at Plantation Ace Hardware in Richmond, where he enjoyed helping customers and sharing his knowledge. JD will be remembered for his generous spirit, kind heart, and willingness to help others. He was never too busy to lend a hand and always did so with a smile.

JD was preceded in death by his parents, Hertha and Otto Meyer, and his grandson, Ian Hampton Meyer. He is survived by his wife, Melinda; his daughter, JoAnna (Meyer) Burton and husband, Allen; his son, John Meyer and wife, Beth; and six grandchildren: Wade, Sam, and Jack Burton; and Haynes (Meyer)Lange and husband, Rupert, Annika (Meyer) Criner and husband, Tate, and Greta Meyer; and his siblings Marjorie (Meyer) Husbands and husband, Tim, and Herbert “Butch” Meyer and wife, Beatrice.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Laurence Catholic Church on June 18, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., followed by a reception at the church.
