Nancy Owen Merritt was called to eternal life on the 13th of August 2024. The second of four children, she was born in Houston, Texas on the 27th of June 1950 to Jane Davis Owen and Alfred Bodden Owen, Jr. (Bob).
After graduating from Memorial High School in Houston at seventeen, Nancy attended and graduated from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia. While at Agnes Scott, she met William Russel Merritt, Jr., whom she married on the 2nd of September 1972.
She moved out of state with her husband and settled down as a pastor’s wife. The birth of her children was the highlight and joy of her life. When her marriage ended in 1988, Nancy moved with her children back to her hometown of Houston to be surrounded by the love and support of her family.
Devoted to her Lord and thirsty for His word, she immersed herself in multiple Bible studies and particularly enjoyed Bible Study Fellowship.
In 1988 she began to work at Second Baptist Church as a receptionist, and then in 1990 accepted a position with Second Baptist School in accounts payable. Second Baptist School became a home away from home and she treasured her hours there.
Nancy loved to snuggle her rescue dogs as she would crochet or make patchwork quilts. She had a passion for reading and looked forward to holidays with her extended family. Her love for family was evident in her excitement as her children took spouses and her joy at the birth of her granddaughter, Kadence.
Nancy is preceded in death by her brother, James Patrick Owen, her father, Alfred Bodden Owen, Jr., and her mother, Jane Davis Owen. Nancy is survived by her two siblings and their spouses, Richard and Martha Owen, Elizabeth and Lloyd DeLano, Wendy Owen, the widow of James, her son, Owen Merritt, her daughter, Kahra and son in law, Bryce Barkley, and granddaughter, Kadence Lenore Barkley.
Nancy was a woman of deep faith. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me shall live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die." (John 11:25-26) Therefore, we know with certainty that it is well with her soul.
A Celebration of Life service for Nancy Owen Merritt will be performed on the 29th of August at 11:00 a.m. at Second Baptist Church Hankamer Chapel. Reverend Duncan Shanklin, a pastor at Second Baptist Church, is officiating.
In lieu of customary remembrances, please direct memorial contributions to Second Baptist School Foundation at https://www.secondbaptistschool.org/give.
