On December 24, 2025, we lost a true pillar of our community. Susan Wallis was a woman who didn’t just live in a community; she built it.
Born on October 23, 1947, and raised on Munger Street in southeast Houston, Susan spent decades putting down roots in Needville, Texas, where she became one of its most beloved figures. For more than 35 years, she poured her creativity and care into ‘A’ Flower & Gift Shop in Needville, building not just arrangements, but lasting relationships with the families she served.
Susan’s giving spirit extended far beyond her shop. She was a tireless volunteer whose fingerprints are on nearly every corner of community life in Needville and beyond, including Lions Club International, Needville Senior Citizens, PTA, Band Boosters, Athletic Boosters, the Needville Youth Fair, the Needville Harvest Festival, the Needville Area Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts of America, and countless other organizations. Shortly before her passing, she completed her term as Chairman of the Board for the Texas Lions Camp. She ensured the camp was positioned for the future before stepping down to focus on her own health.
She was no stranger to adversity. She survived melanoma in 1985 and breast cancer in 2012. Each time, she used her resilience not for herself, but to strengthen those around her. She faced every challenge with the same quiet determination that defined everything she did.
As a philosopher wrote, “You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.” Mom gave us everything. She showed us that a heart stays full only by being poured out for others.
Susan was preceded in death by her father, Willis Earl Johnston; her mother, Besta Callaway Johnston; and her brother, Tommy. She is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 58 years, Thomas Spencer Wallis Jr. of Needville; her two sons, Spencer of Houston, and Robert of Needville; and many beloved relatives across the Wallis, Johnston, and Callaway families.
