MARGARET ROSE NICKELS JOHNSTON, age 83, arrived in Heaven on Friday, October 2, 2009. She was born April 6, 1926 in Edna, Texas and moved to Houston at age 17 to attend business school. She made her career at Southern Pacific Railroad and Fleming Foods and served the church and various civic organizations throughout her life. At retirement, she and Toby moved to Bellville where they were active members of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and Bellville Country Club for 23 years.
Margaret is preceded in death by her mother, Lillie Nickels Blahuta, father, Louis Albert Nickels, brother Louis Nickels and son, Jeffery Johnston. She is survived by her husband of 62 years Carl (Toby) Johnston, daughter Brenda Johnston DeVore and husband Ralph DeVore, grandsons Matthew Carl Johnston and Jeffery Scott Johnston and brother Tom Nickels. Her highest joy was giving of herself and being with family. Her nieces (especially Cindy, Linda and Carolyn), nephews, family and friends will miss her beyond words. No sweeter soul will ever exist. Her kindness and gentle spirit were a gift to those she touched and she leaves a legacy of love expressed through a Christ-centered life.
A special thank you to the staff of Silverado Senior Living Cypresswood and Silverado Hospice for the exceptional care extended to Margaret and the family.
A mass of celebration will be held Monday, October 5th, at 10:30 am at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 6646 Addicks Satsuma Road. A private graveside service with the family will follow. Contributions can be made to charity of choice.
