Born Loralva Gray in San Marcos, TX on December 21, 1932. Attended San Marcos Baptist Academy before moving to Uvalde, TX and graduating from Uvalde HS in 1949. She received her teaching certificate and degree from Southwest Texas State Teachers College in 1953, and landed her first full-time teaching job in Kingsville, TX in 1954 where she met and married William A. Lakey.
Loralva grew up primarily on a ranch in Camp Wood, TX where she may have never learned to ride a bicycle but she could barrel race with the best of them. She taught school in Houston during the 1960s and 1970s, and had an incredible appetite for reading. A lover of music and musicals, Loralva played the piano and loved to listen to a wide variety of singers from Nat King Cole to Eddy Arnold, from Perry Como to the old Sing Along with Mitch television shows. She was never afraid to try to cook a new dish, often using her family and friends as guinea pigs for her culinary creations. She loved fancy brunches at Brennan's and chopped beef sandwiches from Old Hickory Inn.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Zac B. and Leona Gray of Camp Wood, TX, and her brother Zac L. Gray of Reno, TX. She is survived by her children Bill (Pat) Lakey, Leanne (Tony) Davis and Lori K Newport. Grandchildren JP Hooks, Joshua Morejon, Leah Morejon, William Newport, Jenny Newport, Sean Davis, Zach Davis and 10 Great-Grandchildren.
A special thank you to all her caregivers at Treemont where she resided.
Celebration of life will take place October 19th, 2023 at Molina's Cantina, 7901 Westheimer Rd. from 1pm to 3pm in the private event room.
In lieu of flowers please read a book, work a crossword, or try a new dish. Honoring the memory of Loralva is as easy as reading to a child and listening to some old music that was popular in an era long behind us.
