In Memory of
Olive Nkeiru Bassey
-

Olive Nkeiru Bassey passed away on June 19, 2025 at the age of 66, in Houston, Texas, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Aba, Imo State, Nigeria, to Thompson Ahamefula Igbo and Roselyn Ugoji Igbo, Olive’s life was marked by resilience, warmth, and a deep devotion to those she loved. Her journey took her across continents from Nigeria to the United Kingdom, where she welcomed her beloved daughter, Chidinma Onye, and eventually to the United States, where she went on to build her life.
In America, Olive met and married Bassey Ita Bassey, and together they shared 20 years of joyful companionship until his passing. Their union was filled with laughter and enduring respect.

A lifelong believer in the power of education, Olive earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and dedicated many years to teaching. She was passionate about nurturing young minds and took pride in helping others.

Olive had a quiet, delightful sense of humor that often caught people by surprise. She was good-natured, compassionate, and had a way of making everyone feel welcome. A lover of style, she had an impeccable eye for fashion. She was rarely seen without a carefully chosen outfit and her creativity and skill in sewing made her wardrobe uniquely her own.

She will be deeply missed for her warmth, generosity, and the steadfast love she gave so freely to her family and friends.

Olive is survived by her daughter Chidinma Onye, her son-in-law, James West; her siblings, Ms. Gladys Igbo, Dr. Boyd Igbo, Mr. Frank Igbo, Ms. Lilian Onwunali, Ms. Chinwe Abii Igbo, and Mr. Tennyson Igbo; Nephews: Joshua Igbo, Clinton Igbo, Ebuka Onwunali, Thompson Igbo, Rhema Abii, and Sean Abii; and nieces: Leslie Igbo, Krystal Igbo Ogbonna, Courtney Igbo Ogbonna, Adaeze Abii, Angel Abii, Adaobi Igbo, Somadina Abii, Seantel Abii, and Shilo/Gold/Ethelle Igbo; as well as other beloved relatives.

Funeral Mass will be on Thursday, July 3, 2025 at 11 AM at St. Theresa Catholic Church (705 St Theresa Blvd, Sugar Land, TX 77498), followed by burial at Forest Park Southwest Cemetery (9040 FM359, Richmond, TX 77406).

TRIBUTE TO A KIND AND CARING LADY - OLIVE NKIRU (NKI) BASSEY

I write with a broken heart and great sadness . Your death came to me as a shock as I never expected you to go too soon. I was with you in June last year and never thought that it will be the last time.

In life, you were such a caring lady that puts the needs, well being and happiness of others before your own. This is the testimony of many friends who knew you from many years ago. We were friends from home, Nigeria and our friendship endured till your death. Many will describe you as reserved, but behind the reserved personality is someone who cares and wouldn’t like to offend anyone.

Your departure has created a vacuum. I will miss you a lot. Your smile and generosity will be highly missed. We will miss your great fashion sense.

May the Almighty God strengthen and comfort your family especially your daughter, Chidimma and her husband, James. May the Angels welcome you with open hands into God's kingdom where you will suffer no more pains. May your gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Adieu Nki.

From Julie Osuchukwu and family.
