JOHNNIE RAE PENNINGTON KNIGHT went to be with her Lord and Saviour on 12 April 2014. She was born on 5 October 1928 in Shreveport, Louisiana. Johnnie married Joe E. Knight, who lovingly called her “Little Sugar,” on 16 September 1949.
Johnnie enjoyed playing the piano, genealogy, playing bridge, and shopping trips with her grandchildren. She never met a stranger and loved sharing a smile and a good story. She was very special to her family and friends.
Johnnie was a member of the Second Baptist Church where she volunteered in the Prayer Room and was the superintendent of Vacation Bible School. She volunteered a lot of her time to The Daughters of the American Revolution, The Ladies Reading Club, the Tanglewood Garden Club, the Houston Assembly of Delphian Chapters, and was President of The Realtors Wives and the American Museum Society. Johnnie enjoyed square dancing with her husband, Joe, and was a member of two dancing clubs: The Explorers and C-2R.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Joe E. Knight; her parents, Almeda Gilbert Pennington and John Carroll Pennington, Sr.; sister Christine Williamson; brothers, Jake Pennington and Jerry Pennington. Johnnie, “Suggie,” as she was affectionately known to her family will be lovingly remembered by her children, Teena Rae and husband James Richard (Dick) Reese, Janet Carroll and husband Marlin Ray Musselman; four grandchildren, Kimberly Reese Slade and husband Jeffrey Slade, Amanda Reese Reierson and husband Jeffrey Reierson, Matthew Scott Musselman, Emily Reese; five great-grandchildren, James Slade, Kate Reierson, Jackson Slade, Caroline Reierson, Charlotte Slade; and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation with the family will be held on Thursday, 17 April 2014 at 11 o'clock in the morning at the grave site followed by a memorial service at 12 o’clock in the afternoon at Glenwood Cemetery, 2525 Washington Avenue, with David Sproul officiating.
