After a sudden and severe heart issue, Leighton Ogg passed away late in the evening of August 14th in Katy Texas. He was lovingly surrounded by his wife Karen, his two sons Jeremy and Nathan, his soon-to-be daughter-in-law Kelsey Lambert, and his sister Marilyn Brown and her husband David Brown.
Leighton was born on Good Friday, March 30th, 1945, in Pasadena, California to Kenneth and Helen Ogg. Sadly, when he was 3 years old, his mother passed away. Leighton’s father also became ill near the same time, and as a result, Leighton and his two brothers, William and Wesley went to live with their Aunt Grace. Trained at the Moody Bible Institute, Aunt Grace was a retired missionary to Syria then living in Eureka, California, and Leighton always fondly remembered these years living with an aunt who generously magnified the love of her Savior while caring for 3 young boys during a very difficult season in their lives.
When Leighton’s father regained his health, God blessed him with a new wife, Elizabeth Bua. They were all reunited together in Sierra Madre, California, starting a new family where 1 ½ years later Leighton’s sister Marilyn was born, and it was there in the foothills of the Sierra Madre’s that Leighton first cultivated his love for the mountains and the outdoors, a love that would captivate him the rest of his life.
Because Leighton’s grandfather, William Duncan Ogg, had been an associate pastor with Dr. Louis Talbot, the Ogg family began faithfully attending the Church of the
Later, Leighton earned a degree from California State University at Long Beach where he first felt the call to ministry, and upon heeding that call began to pursue a Master of Divinity from Talbot Theological Seminary in La Mirada, California. Leighton graduated seminary in 1972 while working for the Church of the Open Door as a janitor, youth group leader, and missionary.
Accepting an invitation from Pastor Jim Klubnik, Leighton made the decision to move from California to Houston, Texas in 1972 to serve as Youth Pastor and then Interim Pastor of Houston’s Grace Bible Church. And it was in 1975 after moving to Houston that Leighton met his wife Karen where they were married for 51 years, loving the Lord and each other while raising 2 sons, Jeremy and Nathan in Katy, Texas.
Leighton went on to become Associate Pastor at Bear Creek Community Church in Katy Texas, and in 1984 he started his Individual and Marriage Pastoral Counseling practice called “Renewed Perspective.” For the next 42 years, he loved and served families and individuals in the greater Houston area, meeting people at their place of need and faithfully pointing to Scripture as the medicine to heal the wounds of everyday life. Many will fondly remember what is affectionately called “Leighton’isms,” where Leighton had a way of taking profound truths and restating them in a down-home way that a person could relate to, often encouraging people to take time to ponder on how these truths might influence both their personal relationships and their relationship with the Lord.
Later in life, Leighton served as one of the 3 teachers of Grace Awakening Community Group at Kingsland Baptist Church. As he got older, his love for photography opened another avenue of service, where one of his great joys was to witness and memorialize the Sunday morning Baptisms through pictures every week, along with taking pictures for Family Dedications, the International Festival, Vacation Bible School, or any event at church. He always had his camera ready to serve the Lord right up until he was called to his Heavenly Home.
Leighton is preceded in death by his mother Helen Ogg, father Kenneth Ogg, stepmother Elizabeth Ogg, and his brothers William Ogg and Wesley Ogg.
All are invited to a memorial service to grieve his loss, celebrate his life, and express gratitude for the assurance of resurrection through Jesus Christ our Lord. The memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday September 8th at Kingsland Baptist Church’s Central Campus. Reception will follow in the fellowship hall.
A private family service was held at Hartsville Cemetery in Wallis Texas.
