In Memory of
Renee Elaine Harden
-

Renee Elaine Harden, of Houston, Texas, passed away at the age of 71 after a hard fought battle against cancer on April 25th in Houston, Texas. She was born on October 24, 1949 at St. Joseph’s hospital in Downtown Houston, to Opal and R.B. Bayer as the youngest child and only daughter.

Renee was a Tigerette on the drill team and graduated in 1967 from Spring Woods High School, in Houston, and would then attend the University of Texas in Austin. Always the life of the party, she then moved to the bustling San Francisco area in California with her boyfriend George. She stayed for a couple years and after coming back to Texas, she met Roky Erickson at a concert. She later picked him up hitchhiking to Houston and ended up starting a relationship that would culminate in their informal marriage, living as Husband and Wife in Texas. They then had a beautiful daughter named Spring Opal Erickson in 1974, but before the child’s birth, Roky left the soon-to-be mom. Despite the hardships of being a single mother, she gave everything she had to her child. The mother-daughter duo would spend almost all of their time together, sharing the close-knit bond that would last all her life. Renee would work as a Design Draftsman for several companies in the oil industry throughout her career. A company of importance was Welex, where she met numerous life-long friends such as Cindy Burns and Bill York. Her good friend Bill York would then introduce her to Calvin Harden, who she would fall in love with, and marry on February 2, 1985. Living a happy life with Calvin, she worked hard, setting an example for all.  Sadly, she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009.  She kept her job, working through her first bout with cancer, finally ringing that last chemo bell in 2011.  She would retire from HDI in 2015, allowing her to spend more time with her family and especially her two grandchildren, taking them to dance rehearsals and football practices. Always being very involved with all of their activities, such as competitions and performances, along with being very active in her community, such as her role as Vice President of the Royal Oaks Civic Association. She organized the Fourth of July parade for her neighborhood annually. She loved to swim, shop, talk politics and walk with her dog, never letting age or illness get in her way.  Another of her passions was her BSF Bible Study group.  She truly enjoyed deepening her knowledge of the Lord’s word and would often care for the young children at church on Tuesdays so others could enjoy the services.

Renee is survived by her loving husband, Calvin Harden; her only child, Spring Walker and husband Michael, Texas; 2 grandchildren, William and Autumn Walker.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Ralston Burnhardt “R.B.” Bayer and Opal Bernice Blanchette Bayer; her brothers, Ralston and Ronald Bayer; and her niece Meta Schotte.

Services will be held on Tuesday May 4th at Beresford Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 12:00 to 1:00, with funeral services beginning at 1:00. Graveside service and Burial will follow at Earthman Resthaven Cemetery at 3:00.

The family would like to thank all the caregivers who looked after Renee in her final months and to everyone who gave their support and love in those difficult times. A special thanks to Bill Stegall, long-time family friend who will lead the services for Renee on Tuesday, and her BSF group who helped to lift her up during her long hard fight against cancer.
