Michael Palmer (a.k.a. baba, Mike, pops, Grandpa Mike) passed away after being diagnosed with cancer on April 29, 2020, one month after celebrating his 75th birthday.
Michael was born on March 27, 1945 in Ocala, FL and raised in New York, NY. He graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1970 with a B.S. in Mathematics. Michael joined the Army and deployed to Vietnam as a radio operator. Sgt. Michael Palmer was honorably discharged in 1973. He graduated from the University of Louisville in 1975 with a M.Sc. in Civil Engineering and earned his Professional Engineering certification in 1981.
He married Helen Palmer in 1979 after working together in Iraq. They moved to Houston, TX where Michael worked as a Geotechnical Engineer for various companies throughout the Houston area. They raised two sons in the Houston suburb of Alief, TX.
Michael had a thirst for knowledge and read books from a variety of topics, including astronomy, religion, self-help, and science fiction. He maintained an assortment of collections, including Iraqi paintings, Mesopotamian artifacts, and comic books. Michael had a dry, quick sense of humor that he managed to pass on to his sons. Michael and Helen watched their children grow and eventually move on to their own life adventures.
Michael cared for Helen as she battled cancer and mourned her passing in 2013. He remarried in 2016 to Susan where they continued to live in Houston, TX. Michael continued to work part-time and enjoyed occasional trips to the casino and watching his grandchildren grow.
Michael is survived by his wife, Susan Palmer of Houston, TX; his eldest son and daughter-in-law, Sargon and Lori Palmer of Cedar Park, TX; his youngest son, Mathew Palmer of New York, NY; and his grandchildren, Harrison and Lola Palmer of Cedar Park, TX. He is preceded in death by his previous wife, Helen; and his parents, John Palmer and Helen Roth.
Due to the current pandemic, there will not be a public visitation or service. He will be missed, but he lived a full life and is now at peace.
