John Béla Visy, 69, peacefully passed away on June 27, 2026. He was born on August 22, 1956, and was adopted as an infant by Hungarian immigrants Maria and Béla Visy. Their family expanded in 1960 with the adoption of John’s younger brother, Joe, and the family made their home in Millburn, New Jersey. John and Joe were blessed to grow up in a loving home.
John graduated from Syracuse University and served his country for 13 years in the United States Air Force before receiving an honorable discharge. He was stationed at Beale AFB in California and Langley AFB in Virginia. Following his military service, John found a home at the Peninsula Rescue Mission in Newport News, Virginia, where he faithfully volunteered for 27 years in exchange for room and board.
In the Summer of 2025, John was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. As his health declined and he was no longer able to care for himself, John asked Joe to bring him to Texas so he could be near his only family.
On May 4, 2026, John and Joe were reunited for the first time in 40 years. Together they flew to Houston, where John was admitted to hospice care through the VA. Over the following weeks, they spent nearly every day together rebuilding their bond, revisiting childhood memories through old home movies, and cheering on their hometown Knicks to win the NBA Championship. John was able to meet his niece on his first-ever FaceTime call and had the opportunity to meet his 2 nephews in person. These weeks were a precious gift of reconnection and peace, and John knew he was loved and not alone.
John is survived by his brother, Joseph Visy, and his wife, Jean; niece Kristen Visy Llewellyn; nephews Michael Visy and Scott Visy; and their families.
A private internment will be held in Summit, New Jersey, where John will be laid to rest alongside his parents and grandparents.
Memorial contributions may be made to Peninsula Rescue Mission (prm.info), 3700 Huntington Avenue, Newport News, VA 23607, in support of its ministry to homeless men and women.
