Dorothy Carolyn Marshall ’’Dot” passed away peacefully at her home in Houston Texas on September 8, 2023.
She was 99 years old and surrounded by family. She was born on January 31, 1924 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Charles Hough and Carrie Lyons.
She was born with an ear for music and had a gifted talent that started at a young age including playing the piano, organ, harmonica and accordion. At 16 years of age, she was playing the piano at White Oak Baptist and then, met Jack Marshall who passed a window and saw her. Within a few minutes he was inside the church to meet his Dot. They fell in love and were married. They lived in Houston and Chicago where he served in the U.S. Navy. In their 20’s Jack had polio and it was very serious. She promised the Lord if he would bring Jack home to her, she would use her hands and talent to serve the Lord and she did! Dot was the pianist at Woodhaven Baptist Church for 40 years.
She served the Lord. In the following years, she played for weddings and even had the opportunity to play with the Gaithers. She also brought joy to residents of nursing homes and retirement centers entertaining them weekly throughout Houston and surrounding areas. She was a dedicated woman.
She is survived by three loving daughters, Colleen Etie of Spring Texas, Susan and son-in-law Rollie Andre of Katy Texas and Kathy and son-in-law Darryl Smith of Houston Texas. She loved her girls.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Jack Marshall, Grandson Stacy Taylor and son-in-law Walter Etie.
She is survived by three grandchildren, Nicole Settle, Shannon and Craig Bloodworth, Seventeen great grandchildren, Christianne Taylor, Victoria and Witt Duncan, Austin and Kendall Taylor, Jack Bloodworth, Emma Bloodworth, and Olivia Bloodworth, Jake Settle, Nicholas and Kelsey Settle, Ava Settle, Peyton Settle, Cayden Settle, The Guitterez Family and five great great grandchildren, Hayes Duncan, Farah Duncan, Duke Taylor, Leighton Taylor and Cooper Taylor.
Services will be held on Tuesday, September 19,2023 at Houston First Baptist Chapel visitation at 11 and the funeral will begin at noon officiated by Craig Bloodworth. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
