Julia (Medeiros) Cooper, 87, passed away on Thursday, October 21, 2022. She was born in Bristol, R.I on September 11, 1935 to the late Joaquim and Bertha (Pacheco) Medeiros.

She is survived by her daughter Sharon Dozier and husband Pat, daughter Julie Graham, son Johnny Cooper and wife Marcy, son Scott Cooper and wife Lisa, and Michelle Champagne and husband Chris. She was Grandmother to Kathy Hogan, Travis Dozier, Crystal Miller, Brandon Cooper, Cody Cooper, Josh Cooper, Brittany Cooper, Brooke Cooper, Emmett Champagne, Steven Champagne, and Christi Thornton. Great Grandchildren: Paul Hogan, Aiden Dozier, Carter Dozier, Cheyenne Miller, DJ Miller, Kinley Cooper, Claire Cooper, Cameron Cooper, Ryleigh Cooper, Reagan Cooper, and Leia Lindsay.

She was the sister of the late Delia Cabral, Manuel Medeiros, Anthony Medeiros, John Medeiros, Bertha Reynolds, Louis Medeiros, Joaquim Medeiros, Florence Andreozzi, Irene Quintal, and Mary Medeiros.

She grew up in Bristol, RI and graduated from Colt Memorial High School in 1954. After graduation she worked for the local telephone company until 1957 when she married Johnny Ray Cooper who was a Texas boy stationed at the Naval base in Newport, RI. In 1970, the family moved from Rhode Island to Texas.

She worked most of her adult life in various retail and service jobs doing what she could to help support the family, all this while raising 5 children. Some of her jobs included such places as Almacs grocery store and Nyanza Department Store in Rhode Island and then B&W meat company, Globe Department Store, and Doyle’s Restaurant in Houston. Her final job was with Walmart where she worked for 18 years up until age 77. She worked in several departments at Walmart including Door Greeter during her time there. She had a very strong work ethic that she instilled in all of her children.

She loved spending time with the family, was a huge Elvis Presley fan, and loved her Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots (especially Tom Brady). She was very proud of her heritage and her hometown of Bristol, RI. She was particularly proud of her hometown’s 4th of July parade, which has been deemed America’s oldest fourth of July celebration. She was always the life of the party and will be missed dearly.

Funeral services will take place on Friday, October 28, 2022 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church (3600 Brinkman St, Houston, TX 77018).  Visitation begins at 10 am and Mass at 11 am.  Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery (1101 Antoine Rd., Houston, TX 77055).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association or the charity of your choice.
