In Memory of
Rafael L. Martinez
-

Rafael Martinez, of Houston, Texas, passed away at the age of 82 on July 9, 2022, in Sugar Land, Texas.

He was born on November 19, 1939 in Aguascalientes, Mexico to Cliserio de Luna and Josefina Martinez.

The first word to come to mind when describing Rafael is Kind. If you had the pleasure of knowing him, you could expect him to greet you with a warm, welcoming smile. He was a considerate host and always ensured his guests left with full bellies and happy smiles. He was always a phone call away, ready to help you with whatever you needed. The inconvenience or the importance of the task never mattered to him. If you asked for his help for anything, you received all of his attention every time. And even when you didn’t ask but looked like you needed some help, he would offer it. He made every effort to ensure everyone around him was happy and never complained. He would surprise you with kind words or gifts or some candy that he always seemed to have with him. He loved to dance and would ask you to dance whenever music played, which was often because he always had some salsa music ready to go on his phone. He was the king of the dance floor and could twirl you every which way! He would grab his wife, and they put everyone else on the dance floor to shame, making everyone feel they were watching them from the 80s when they met. He was a loving and adoring husband, a hard worker, and full of one-liners like, “what’s cooking, good looking?” He always took the time to remind everyone around him how special, loved, and beautiful they were. We will miss his laughs, his smiles, and especially his cheesy jokes, “even on Sunday’s!”

Rafael is survived by his wife, Rosa Bulliski. His daughters Angela and Raquel. Angelas’ children, his grandchildren, Brianna and Michael.  Stepdaughter Claudia, her husband Everardo, and their children. Grandson Kent Serratos, his wife Brittany and their children, his great-grandchildren Preston Luke, Pierce Alexander, Alec, and Vivian. Granddaughters Karolena and Kimberly Serratos. And his loving dogs, Princess Leia and Vader.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Josefina, and his beloved cat, Schwartz.

Services will be held on Wednesday, July 13th Beresford Funeral Service (13501 Alief Clodine Road, Houston, Texas 77082) with the Visitation beginning at 10 am the Funeral Service beginning at 11 am.

Goodnight, my Love!

Rafael was a caring and giving person who was always ready to lend a hand or offer advice. I will never forget the conversation we had about his life experiences and the advice he would offer for my own. Thank you Rafael, I will never forget you.

Rafael was the man who taught me about unconditional love and affection. Everyone, precisely as they were, deserved his love. He was generous, perhaps to a fault, and never demanded anything in return for his love or time. One of his favorite activities was to sit in a chair in his garage, in the Houston heat, just to be available to his neighbors if they ever needed help. And if someone asked for his help, they received it. And even if you didn’t ask, he would still offer it.
It is difficult to realize what someone you’ve had your life has taught you until they are gone, but I think he knew how grateful I was for his love, advice, and dance lessons.
I’d never met anyone with such zest for joy and ever-ready to dance. He always had his favorite dance music ready on his phone, and pressing “play” was enough to start a dance party. I did not understand why he always insisted on everyone dancing. It never occurred to me that he was happiest when dancing because he knew his dance partner was happy, too.
He was not my grandfather by blood, but by the effort and devotion he chose to give me every day of my life. I am so incredibly grateful for all the time we did share and for all support, he always gave me so freely and so lovingly. With all my love, “even on Sundays,” Kimberly

I couldn’t have asked for a more loving and intuitive man to call my grandpa. You always listened, and gave words of wisdom and of experience. I’m going to miss calling you on the phone and hearing you say “how you doing beautiful?” I cherish the memories I have with you, living next door to you growing up, going on rides down the creek on your little boat, having garage sales together on the weekends and selling things we had collected, and having me dance with you at your parties. All of these memories and more I hold close to my heart. You had strong faith in God, and for that, I know you are finally at peace. I love you forever and always ,

Brianna

I did not know Rafael as long as most people here. But I can say I was blessed to have met him. He put a smile on my face from the first time I met him and each and every time after. Thank you Rafael!! God bless!!!
