The world lost a beautiful soul, Ramon Merino, son of Ramon Felipe & Maria Dolores Merino departed this world for eternal paradise on March 5th, 2015 at the age of 85.
He was born in Hershey, Cuba in 1929. He left in 1948 to attend Louisiana State University, where he graduated with a degree in chemical engineering in 1952. He then returned to Cuba and worked for Shell Oil. He relocated his family, his wife Maria Elena and their four children Ramon, Lourdes, Julio and Loreta, to Lakeland, FL in July of 1967. He left everything behind to start over for the dream of a better life and the opportunity to live in freedom in the United States. He then spent 2 years in Hannibal, Missouri, finally settling in Houston, Texas. He was employed with Lummus Co., building a career until he retired.
A devoted husband and father, he and Maria Elena were blessed with 52 years of loving marriage, many grandchildren & great-grandchildren and a devoted Yorkshire terrier named Coco. He was involved with many of several church’s organizations, an active night of Columbus, and enjoyed helping Houston’s Cuban Refugees. In his free time he also enjoyed traveling with Coco, his constant companion, gardening, playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Maintaining an active social life was easy for Ramon until the end Thanks to his weekly lunch dates with his friends and other retired engineers, some whom he had known since his life in Cuba.
With the passing of Ramon Merino, the world has become a little less bright. He was a man of great faith and a vessel of peace. His love, spirit and passion for life not only impacted those whom he was closest, but every single person he touched along the way. The people he considered family, whether by blood or friendship, were truly given a gift from above. His memory will forever be in our hearts and his presence in our past will always remembered in our future.
