In Memory of
Ruth Christensen White
-

After 96 years of a very full life, Ruth Christensen White, passed away peacefully in Houston on March 1, 2022. Ruth was born in Decatur, Illinois on July 30, 1925 to John Tobias Christensen, who immigrated from Denmark, and his wife Ollie Harris Christensen. She was preceded in death by sisters Doris Wood, Betty Isham, and brother Jim Christensen. Ruth moved to Corpus Christi in her early 20s to live with her Aunt Blanche, and while working at a bank in Corpus met and then married Mel White in 1948. They were married for 51 years until Mel passed away in 2000. Ruth and Mel moved from their family dairy farm in Robstown to Houston in the late 1950s and settled into their home on Memorial Drive in Memorial Bend. Together with Mel, Ruth raised their four children there, and Ruth continued to live until her 90th year. Most recently Ruth lived at Atria Westchase. In the early 1960s Mel and Ruth became charter members of Tallowood Baptist Church, where Ruth taught Sunday school to children and worshiped for many years. In their later years, she and Mel moved their membership to Second Baptist Church where they were active in the Beacon Sunday school class. She continued to practice her Christian faith until she passed away. While motherhood took up much of her early married years, she later enjoyed working outside the home and the independence that permitted her. Some of Ruth’s tasty go-to recipes were her Thanksgiving cranberry salad, french silk pie, Snappy Cheese Bake, and King Ranch chicken. She sewed her daughters’ clothing up until the time they left for college. Ruth was a strong supporter of her children’s education through college and graduate schools. Ruth enjoyed hosting regular and festive summer water skiing weekends a their Lake Travis house, and cooking for large groups of family and friends. Ruth was active socially in other ways like playing Bridge regularly, a Junior League of Houston patron, and an avid mall walker. Ruth joined close friends for several years at the Women’s Institute for political science classes taught by professor Dr. Ross Lence.  Ruth is survived by her four children, Susan White of Houston, Nancy White Eppes and her spouse Steve Eppes also of Houston, Phil White and his spouse Susanna Vanankeren White of Atlanta, and Jeff White of San Francisco. Ruth had five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The grandchildren:  Andrew Eppes and his spouse Anne Eppes and their children Cora Jean and Drew live in Dallas. Brian White, his spouse Casey Johnston White and daughter Kaiya Crawley live in Austin. Emily Eppes Beman and her spouse Mike Beman, and their children David and Patrick live in Houston. Caitlin White of Atlanta and Stephen White of Athens, Georgia. There will be a brief graveside ceremony in April where she will be laid to rest with her husband at the Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation to a charity of your choice.
