In Memory of
Damon Hyland Wright
-

Damon Hyland Wright passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday April 6, 2021 in Houston, Texas. He was born October 10, 1939 in Quincy Massachusetts to Harry Waimalu Wright of Honolulu, Hawaii and Impi (Virginia) Alvera Ylonen Wright of Parikkala, Finland as one of seven children.

Damon graduated from the Louisiana School for the Deaf in 1959. It is there that he met Audrey Leger, whom he married in 1961 and together had four children. In 1969 Damon moved his growing family from Louisiana to Texas after accepting a job with the Houston Post where he worked as a proofreader for next 25 years until the newspapers closure on April 18, 1995. During the summer months, Damon and Audrey would spend weekends taking trips with the kids down to the beach for family time. He later went to work for Academy Sports to keep himself busy which he did for another two decades. In his free time, he enjoyed following his favorite sports teams, which being a Massachusetts man were of course the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. During his time in Louisiana, he also grew to love the LSU Tigers whose colors he wore proudly. But his first love was always cars and racing. He enjoyed working on cars and believed the Ford Mustang was the greatest car there was. In his later years, he enjoyed attending church and regularly sneaking away to the slot machines. He was always in attendance at birthdays and holidays and cherished his time with family.

Damon leaves behind his four children Dana Wright, Alvin Wright and wife DeDe, Jennifer Gortney and husband Danny, and Pamela Williams; grandchildren Jessica and husband Ethan, Austin, Devyn, Whitney and husband Brandon, Emmanuel, Meraiah, and Temple; great-grandchildren Aniyah, Peyton, Preston, Pierson, and Parker. In addition, he is also survived by his brothers Mark and Whitney and his sister Charmain (Cissy).

He is preceded in death by his parents Harry and Virginia, his brothers Harrison, Winslow, and Wayne, and great-granddaughter Faith.

Memorial service to be held on Saturday, April 17, 2021 in the Chapel of Beresford Funeral Service at 10:00am.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in his name be made to the charity of your choice.

I spent a lot of my youth around this guy. He always had a joke to tell and a story to share. I remember many days spent working on cars with him in my dads garage in Louisiana. This was something we started doing back when i was in my late teens and early 20s...and continued for many years. Always enjoyed when he would come to visit me and my kids at my home in Houston. Rest in Peace. You were certainly one of a kind.
