With great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved son and brother, Jacob John Hoffman. Jacob passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Tuesday February 16, 2021, at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, TX, from complications of leukemia. Jacob was eleven years old and in the sixth grade at Sartartia Middle School.
Jacob went by a variety of nicknames, including Jake, Jakey, and Jay-bob. He is survived by a loving family: his parents, David Deane Hoffman and Doris Mirian Hoffman; brothers, Michael Deane Hoffman and Noah Alexander Hoffman; sisters, Rebecca Alexandra Hoffman and Hannah Joy Hoffman; grandmother, Judith Patricia Hoffman; great-grandmother, Dorothy Aileen Abrams; step-grandmother, Jean Elizabeth Hoffman; uncle, Pedro Raimundo Soares de Souza; and numerous other aunts, uncles, cousins, great-aunts, and great-uncles.
Jacob was born in Reno, NV on May 8, 2009. Jacob’s mother always said that he was her best Mother’s Day gift. Jacob loved his mother in return. He would often have a snack, a coke, and a sweet note ready for her when she would come home from work.
Jacob also loved his “mutt,” Elvis, who Jake had begged for on his fourth birthday. Jake loved the Reno-Sparks area. It was his hometown and he often reminisced about it. He loved exploring the high deserts and mountains of Nevada. He had a special place in his heart for Lake Tahoe. Jake was also a pool and waterpark fanatic. He would spend hours playing in the sun
and water.
Jacob was a huge foodie and had a passion for cooking. He loved to invent meals or turn his three-minute Ramen into something gourmet. Sometimes the results were positively inedible, but for the most part we had a little Bobby Flay in our home. From burgers to burritos to sushi, he found joy in preparing and critiquing different foods.
Jacob was an all-American boy who loved his Brazilian heritage. As passionately as he loved the United States, he loved Brazil too. He loved visiting Brazil and his family members there, during the summers, and as you could probably guess… he was always excited to eat some authentic Brazilian food.
Jacob was the biggest sports fan. Jacob played lacrosse and baseball, and he always enjoyed getting out and being active. He rooted loyally for the Dodgers, and got to see them win the World Series only a few short months ago. He also loved the Colts. He was so happy to watch Tom Brady win the super bowl again. He decided to root for Tom, once he realized his team was out of the running. Jake made a makeshift Buccaneers jersey out of a garbage bag and red marker, and when the game was finally called, he shouted gleefully and ripped the jersey off his chest. We are grateful for all the little things that brought him joy in his last few months of life.
Jake often said that when he was older, he wanted to serve a mission, go to college, have a family, and either be an engineer or a YouTuber. We are sure that, as Jake passed into the afterlife, his dachshund, Dixie, was waiting to greet him. We know he was also welcomed into the light by his grandmother, Joice Soares de Souza; grandfather, Jack Hoffman; great-grandparents, Edmea Soares de Souza; Cristovam Colombo de Souza; John Abrams; Jack and Martha Hoffman; and his Aunt Gorete Soares de Souza. We know he isn’t alone. Jacob will be loved and missed by his family, relatives, and friends. He will be forever in our hearts and we will carry on his memory by trying new foods, savoring our meals, loving our dogs, enjoying the sunshine, going on new adventures, and singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” as loudly as we can, at all future baseball games. May God hold him in his arms until we meet again. We miss and love you.
The funeral is scheduled for Saturday March 6, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (602 Eldridge Rd, Sugar Land, TX 77478). Burial will be at 1:00 p.m. at Glenwood Cemetery (2525 Washington Ave, Houston, TX. 77007).
