In Memory of
Joann Rethmeyer Carey
-

Joann Rethmeyer Carey, 65, passed away on August 15, 2023 at her home in Houston, Texas, after a long battle with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. She was born on April 27, 1958 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Herman Grover "Joe" Rethmeyer and Rosemarie (Dougherty) Rethmeyer.

She is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Craig Steven Carey; her father; her children, Elizabeth Carey Bernardy & husband Rob, Matthew Craig Carey, and Hanna Kathleen Carey; her siblings, Stephen Rethmeyer, David Rethmeyer & wife Donna, Andrew Rethmeyer & wife Julie, Michael Rethmeyer, and Kate Rethmeyer Ogden & husband Keith; her granddaughter, Rose Kathleen Carey Bernardy, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.

She is preceded by her sister-in-law, Lou Rethmeyer, and her mother.

Growing up, Joann’s family lived in Tulsa, Omaha, Midland, and New Orleans. She graduated from Archbishop Blenk High School in Gretna, Louisiana in 1976. She then settled in Houston, where she met and later married Craig Carey. All 3 of her children were born and raised in Houston. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother. Joann’s children were her sole focus – she could usually be found driving kids to swim meets, golf tournaments, and academic competitions. She enjoyed spending her time visiting with family, doing yard work, listening to music and painting. She was the life of every party and never met a stranger. We will miss the light and laughter she brought into our lives.

Craig, Elizabeth, Matt and Hanna would like to thank Joann's caregivers - Linda, Enoh, and Rose - for the excellent care that they provided in her final months.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 from 5 to 8 pm in the Chapel of Beresford Funeral Service, and again at Beresford's on Thursday, August 24, 2023 at 1 pm. The funeral will start at 2 pm.

I remember Joann as being the life of the party. She was a very special lady, I know mom and dad enjoyed being around her whenever possible.
Maybe they can party again now that they're together in heaven, I'm sure between the 3 of them they can get one going. God bless Joann

My deepest condolences to the Rethmeyer family. Bro-in-law Andrew and my sister Julie always said such wonderful things about Joann as well as the loving and exceptional care Craig gave her. May your memories bring each of you comfort and peace and may God hold you in the palm of His hand during this time.
