Bettye Jo Stembridge passed into God's arms on Wednesday, November 2 at 10:15 AM at Brookdale Shadowlake community. With her were her daughter Kat and her son-in-law Ralph. In her final days many friends from Tallowood Baptist Church, her sorority Beta Sigma Phi, and people who loved her and (as she would say) she "loved right back” were at her side. She was 87 years old.
Bettye passed on to join her late husband Alan and her two sons Andy and Joe. She leaves behind grandsons Matthew and Christopher, granddaughter Crystal Howse, sister
Ann and brother Jim and his wife Estelle, and two nieces Leigh Ann, Brenda and their families. She also leaves behind her beloved Cocker Spaniel, Maggie.
She was born Bettye Jo Harris on December 26, 1929 in El Paso Texas. The people who knew and loved Bettye described her in many ways. She was described as "sweet and sassy," with an infectious laugh, and ageless sense of fun, a big heart and a “very special person” for many. She was also described as a “leader and encourager in life and faith,” a “light wherever she went,” and a “kind and loving Texas character.” She will be sorely missed by all of us who loved her.
Her family is planning a private graveside service at the Houston VA Cemetery. Please come to a Celebration of Her Life at Tallowood Baptist Church (555 Tallowood Drive, Houston, TX 77024) on Friday, November 17, beginning with a service at 11:00 AM.
"Weep not, weep not. She is not dead. She is resting in the bosom of Jesus.”
- James Weldon Johnson
