In Memory of
Daniel Ray Paul
-

Daniel Ray Paul, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away unexpectedly on October 5, 2025, at the age of 64, following a tragic car accident. His sudden departure leaves a profound void in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Daniel was born in Oceanside, California, on September 29, 1961, to Daniel Roger Paul and Betty Mae Sessions. He grew up in the Chicago area, surrounded by a close-knit group of friends, a childhood full of sports, mischief, and a deep loyalty to Chicago’s professional teams — the Bears, Bulls, Blackhawks, and White Sox.

He graduated from Maine East High School in 1979 and attended Brigham Young University. During his college years, he served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Tokyo, Japan — a transformative experience that deeply influenced his worldview. He graduated in 1985 with a degree in Japanese language.

While at BYU, Daniel met the love of his life, Luella Lena Dean. They were sealed in the Provo Temple on December 17, 1983, and built a beautiful life together — one anchored in family, faith, and a shared spirit of adventure. They were blessed with four children: Daniel Roger (born July 31, 1985), Richard Tyler (February 3, 1987), Lena Keilani (May 13, 1989), and Cory Dean (January 8, 1992).

Daniel began his professional career with the National Security Agency (NSA) in 1986, which took him and his young family to Maryland and Japan. In 1992, he began the University of Chicago MBA program, graduating with the Class of 1994. Shortly afterward, he began a 29-year career with Conoco (later ConocoPhillips), which took the family to assignments around the world — including Houston, TX; Jakarta, Indonesia; Doha, Qatar; and Abu Dhabi, UAE. The beauty and diversity of the people, cultures, and places he encountered deepened his wisdom, compassion, and patience — qualities that were evident to all who knew him.

A model of humility, generosity, and service, Daniel gave freely of his time and resources. He served faithfully in both church and community roles, including youth and Scout leader, teacher, volunteer firefighter, bishop, and career mentor. He was a lifelong learner — an avid consumer of books, podcasts, and educational media, always exploring new ideas and skills.
Above all, Daniel was a devoted family man. He found immense joy in spending time with his children, their spouses — Jessica and Andrea — and his grandchildren: Asher, TJ, Eli, Mia, Ben, Noelia, and Jackson. He passed on his love of the outdoors — hiking, biking, and camping — as well as a passion for puzzles, card games, and board games, many of which have become cherished family traditions. His boundless creativity came to life through bedtime stories, blanket fort building, Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, and a knack for turning the everyday into something magical.

Daniel was his family’s biggest cheerleader — coaching youth sports teams, attending tournaments, school plays, and concerts, and always offering encouragement, guidance, and quiet strength.

He is survived by his wife, Lena; his children Dan (Jessica), Tyler (Andrea), Keilani, and Cory; his seven grandchildren; and his sisters, Karen and Diane. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Betty Paul.

Daniel’s legacy is one of love, laughter, service, and unwavering strength. His impact will continue to ripple through the lives of those he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

I truly appreciated the time, love, and patience he extended to my family, especially during our most difficult times. I’ve always admired what a devoted father, grandfather, and husband he was. I’m grateful we were able to get to know him more deeply during his time as bishop and to become friends.

His passing has left me heartbroken and still in shock. Heaven truly gained another angel.

Danny was one of my oldest and dearest friends: more like a brother than a buddy. Our friendship began in childhood and stood the test of time, growing deeper over nearly six decades. We shared countless memories, but what always stood out most was Danny’s warmth, loyalty, humor, and genuine goodness.

Even as life took us in different directions, reconnecting with Danny was always effortless — as if no time had passed. That kind of friendship is rare, and I was blessed to have it.

Danny’s faith, kindness, and steady heart touched everyone who knew him. I’ll always be grateful for the memories we made and the lessons his friendship taught me about loyalty, love, and grace.

Rest in peace, my lifelong friend. Your memory will live on in every life you touched.

My wife and I were managers at the Houston Employment Services and were in desperate need of service missionaries to help us at the employment center. Elder Paul came to help us and what a tremendous help he was! He exceeded all expectations in completing the necessary training and was able to start working with job seekers almost immediately. I the short time that I was fortunate to know him, I found him to be very knowledgeable and proficient in working with his job seekers, while at the same time demonstrating his love and concern for them. I am grateful for his missionary service and the opportunity I had to get to associate with him.

Everytime we in Conoco Indonesia went out visiting the needy families, Dan and family joined us. The Indonesian villagers were so surprised to see the foreign visitors.
Your time and support were deeply appreciated, Dan. Thank you.

I remember Danny passing the Sacrament in the North Shore 2nd Ward when he was a kid. I remember him returning to that ward later with Lena. I remember him as a youth although I was older and closer friends with his sister Karen. My sincere condolences to Lena, Karen and everyone who loved him. He was always the kindest, most humble guy. Till we meet again, Danny.

I knew Danny from the North Shore II Ward in Illinois during high school days. We were in a carpool together to early morning seminary and to high school. We also sat together in the Maine East High School library during our free period along with another friend where the 3 of us would joke and tease with each other. I enjoyed Danny’s sense of humor and his kind heart! He was definitely one of the good ones!! My heart goes out to his entire family. ❤️

I new Dan Paul from working for Conoco Indonesia in Jakarta. Although we were not in the same department, we were both in the basketball team. I remember Dan as a quiet person yet helpful and straight forward. Although this news is devastating, I sincerely pray for the family to be given strength and patience going through this rough time. May Dan rest in peace. His kindness be remembered.

I had the privilege of working with Dan during his time in Jakarta. He taught me that true mastery comes not only from knowledge, but also from the generosity to share it. Many of us in Jakarta grew and benefited from his guidance and kindness.
My heartfelt gratitude to an extraordinary boss, mentor, and friend who helped shape my career — and whose wisdom will always stay with me. My deepest condolences to Lena and the family.
Dan’s legacy will be remembered with great respect and gratitude.
