In Memory of
Donald E. Alford
-

Donald Ernest Alford passed away, unexpectedly, on September 19, 2016. He was born on November 1, 1932 in Nashville, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his Mother, Thelma Ambler Alford, Father, Henry Eden Alford, sisters, Helen Alford and Jackie Alford Lineberger, and brothers, Kenneth Alford and David Alford.

He is survived by his sister, Darlene Alford Stich and three nieces and their families, Vicki and Kent Dunlap, Will Dunlap, Donna and Craig Hester, Mitchell Hester, Meredith Hester Noel and Aubrey Hester, Susan and Robby Partain, Dawn Partain Merrick and Jeff Merrick and great-great nephew J.J. Merrick. Donald was referred to with love as Uncle Turtle by his nieces and nephews. Donald never did anything quickly.

Donald graduated from Aldine High School in 1951. He played football for the Mustangs. Being Darlene’s big brother, he was her hero and she got to brag about him to all of her friends. He also was quick to chase her with snakes and tease her unmercifully. He was also her protector.

In 1953, Donald was drafted and chose to serve in the Coast Guard until 1955 when he was honorably discharged. He continued to serve in the Coast Guard reserves until 1960.

Donald worked for Moore Bros. Distributing Company until he started his own company, Alford Distributing Company, located just off Kirby at 2610 Bissonnet in Houston, Texas.

Donald loved to fish and to travel. He loved to talk and would keep you engaged in a conversation that seemed as if it would continue forever. Our family laughingly said he could talk to a wall. He was the official carver of our holiday turkeys. He carved it to perfection and the presentation was always beautiful.

He will be missed by his family and especially his sister, Darlene, whom he loving called “little sister”.

Donald loved to watch Dr. Ed Young on TV every Sunday morning. We know Donald is now in the loving arms of his Savior Jesus Christ and rejoicing in Heaven with his Mother and siblings.

There will be a private graveside service at Houston National Cemetery here in Houston where his oldest brother Kenneth is buried.

Craig Hester will be officiating at Donald’s service.
