In Memory of
Donald Leroy Hoyt
-

On Monday, December 1, 2008, Donald L. Hoyt passed away at his home in Navasota, TX. Donald, born in New Orleans, LA on August 13, 1938, was the son of Oscar and Rosie Hoyt, and was raised in Alexandria, LA. He graduated from Bolton High School in Alexandria and received his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Louisiana College in Pineville. After marrying his loving wife, Theresiann Rozas, on April 3, 1961, he was introduced to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved his work in the church and served in many callings including Ward Clerk, Branch President, High Councilman, and Bishop. He especially enjoyed being a Sunday School teacher for the 17-18 year olds. Teaching these young people about the Gospel, bearing his testimony to them and watching as they developed testimonies of their own, was a pure delight. It proved to be one of his most enjoyable church experiences, and he remembers the young people from his class with great affection and love.

Don was a proud father of seven children; Roshella & Arnold Burkholder of Katy, TX, Nathan & Jackie Hoyt of Cypress, TX, Dean & Bonnie Hoyt of Katy, TX, Nolan & Crystal Hoyt of Katy, TX, Matthew Hoyt, who preceded Don in death, Diana & Steve Roosa of Katy, TX, and Ladora Hoyt of Washington, D.C. as well as ten grandchildren; Travis Hoyt, Tanner Hoyt, Tyson Hoyt, Trenton Hoyt, James Hoyt, Nicholas Hoyt, Natalie Hoyt, Matthew Roosa, Bailey Hoyt, and Riley Hoyt. He loved his children and grandchildren and was always there for them. He was known to tell his children “don’t worry, I am your father, it is my job” whenever he was to do something for them.

Don and Theresiann recently built their retirement home in Navasota, Texas where they enjoyed having family and friends over. Don truly enjoyed being on his mower and working in the yard. When he was not in the yard working, he was packing up boxes to take to the Post Office. His Texas website kept him active with sales, which Don loved to do. He received great joy out of the sales from his site. One sale or twenty sales did not matter to him; he just loved hearing the computer ding as he got an order.

Everyone that knew Don loved him. He was a kind hearted man, devoted father and grandfather, and a loving husband to Theresiann for more than 47 years. We will all miss him.

Mrs. Hoyt, the boys and I very saddened by your loss. I have enjoyed the many years of really great stories from Roshella and the meetings thru the years. You and Don have what so many couples never get to experience - a great true love of a lifetime! A testiment to that type of love shines thru your children and grandchildren - you have a wonderful family and may they bring you much comfort thru this difficult time.........in our thoughts and prayers, Sandra, Len, Trey and William

I have very few childhood memories that don't involve the Hoyt family. I am grateful for the influence and counsel I recieved from Bishop Hoyt. From the many rides home, to the fun times/activities hosted in his home,to his warm welcome and hug everytime I saw him. I loved him for the fatherly example that he was for me when I needed it most.

Mr. Hoyt performed TDI audits at both title companies of which I am a part-owner of in 2006 and early 2007. He was kind, fair and friendly. On behalf of all of us at Burleson County Title Company and Brenham Abstract & Title Company, I express my sadness for your entire family for your loss. Marshall Harrell III Brenham, Texas

I remember he was the bishop when I joined the church. He was so welcoming and always made sure to stop me whenever I was in his sight to make sure I was doing well and made me feel accepted and loved. He was always a cheer to be around and was such an intelligent speaker! His daughters were very good friends of mine and his wife is a mirror of him with her love and generosity. I will never forget him and I appreciate all he has taught me.

The Hoyts were such a positive, wonderful influence in my life in Houston. Brother Hoyt was such a joy to be around and I was so touched that he would inquire about me even after I moved from the city. I am grateful for the privilege to have known such a caring, wonderful man and to continue to know such a strong, amazing family. I will think nothing but happy thoughts about Brother Hoyt and am sending my prayers and good wishes to his family during this time of remembrance. Thank you Brother Hoyt, I love you!

I loved Don. When he was the bishop of the Alief ward.. we used to tease each other incessantly. One day he showed me a picture of his kids. I said "cute kids. Adopted?" He about fell on the floor laughing.. and then he smacked me. His sense of humor was excellent and his love for the Gospel and the youth of the Gospel especially was 2nd to none.
I will miss Dons emails and perspectives.

Some of my fond memories are while Don was Bishop I was the High Council advisor to the Alief Ward and spent a lot of time working with Don and the other leaders in the ward. It was always pleasant and one of my favorite callings in the Church.
In more recent years I always enjoyed the many e mails that Don forwarded. He had a special talent for finding things that were thought provoking, funny and important.
Everyone was always welcome in the Hoyt home.

Theresa and all you wonderful Hoyt kids, how I wish I could be there with you on Wed. but know I will be thinking of you all. How grateful I know you are for the knowledge we have that your beloved husband and Dad are with Matthew and other loved ones gone before him. I know when my Mom died that is the only thing that got me through missing her. He's watching over you and will be laughing right along with you all whenever you're together. I hope you know how much I loved Don and thought of him as a 2nd dad so often even though I didn't get to see you all that often. What fun memories I have of him and all of you as a family. Thank you for blessing my life as you have and I look forward to the next time I get down to TX. With much love, Heidi

Don was our home teacher in the Alief Ward. He gave me my very first computer lesson in about 1984! One of our favorite memories was one evening when Julianna was old enough to babysit her siblings, David and I came home to find Don sitting on the couch with all the kids sitting on and around him. Julianna was sure she smelled gas from the kitchen stove, and since this was long before cell phones she called our home teacher, Brother Hoyt. Our kids knew him and knew that Brother Hoyt would help them. He stayed until we got home so that our children would not be afraid. We love Don Hoyt....

There are countless acts of service by the Hoyt family. One that comes to mind is when Bishop Hoyt came with a crew of brethen from Alief, LDS church to help us clean up major damage from our burnt home at 12114 Spring Grove in Dec 2000. Though house fire destroyed everything inside the house, I am very THANKFULL to our Heavenly Father for sparing the life of my son, Peter James Martinez. Snall act of service go a long way in the midst of life's crisis.

My heart goes out to Sister Hoyt and her family. I want to thank her and Bishop Hoyt for opening their home to me during seminary, for countless makeup day lessons and TREATS. I would also like to thank them for letting me be Sister Hoyt's co-pilot for three years during seminary. Its only now that Bishop Hoyt can fully see the fruits his labors. Bishop Hoyt will now get to be with his youngest son Matt because your teaching Matt had a righteous life and somehow the plan of salvation will allow them to be together again. Sorry I can't be there to give you a hug Sister Hoyt, I'll have to take a raincheck on the hug.

Please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of Don. I know it has been years since I have seen your family, but I want you to know that I think of the Hoyt family so often. I am truly blessed to have such precious memories of Matt and your family through my teenage years. You always made me feel welcome and accepted at your home, and for that I am grateful. I remember Don as being a very caring, loving, and laid-back kind of father. I also want you to know that although my parents are "not the best" at outwardly showing emotions, especially Dad, they too deeply care for your family. My father was touched that Don took the time to call him and let him know that he was ill. I am sorry that I was unable to attend the service on Wednesday, but Mom did the best job she could to "fill me in." She cried when she told me that Matt would be getting a kiss and a hug from his mother through Don. Take care and know that I miss you all. Sarah

I had only known Don for the past year or so, in my role as High Council Representative to the Navasota Branch of the LDS Church. Nonetheless, I very quickly learned to appreciate and respect this fine man. I was particularly impressed with how he handled his illness and maintained a clear eternal perspective as he faced these challenges. Without a doubt, he understood the Lord's master plan and looked forward to entering back into His presence, even though he would have liked to have had a little more time on this earth. I am very thankful to have known Don, even if it was for a relatively short time. His example was inspiring and will have an eternal impact.

I worked in the same office with Don and we shared expenses and sales experiences. I found him to be honest and hard working. He was dedicated to his Mormon faith.
although I am a Baptist Preacher,I felt he appreciated my attempts to encourage him for I am a student of mormonism
He once said,"James never forgets anything. I know one thing, I'll never forget Don Hoyt!
He was a true and dedicated friend. Teresann if you or your Children need me.. I am as close as your phone.
Sincerely yours,
James
