Guy H. Gaskin, Jr., lovingly known by many as “Pop, Papa, Mr. Guy, Uncle Guy, Minister Guy,” and countless other endearing names, was born on January 2, 1949, in San Antonio, TX, and entered eternal rest on August 18, 2025.
He lived a life rich with humor, generosity, and music, filling every room with melodies. A devoted follower of Christ, Guy faithfully served as a Minister and found great joy in fellowship with family, friends, and community. Raised in California, Guy was the only child of Guy Gaskin, Sr., and Corine Gaskin, yet he was surrounded by a host of cousins who became like siblings to him.
He dedicated over 30 years to the field of X-ray technology, where he was admired as a diligent worker, a supportive colleague, and a compassionate caregiver to his patients. Beyond his profession, Guy delighted in cooking, cherished music, especially jazz, and embraced opportunities to mentor and encourage others. Above all, Guy was a family man.
He shared nearly 44 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Gwendolyn Gaskin, and together they built a life rooted in faith, laughter, and love. He was a proud father to his children: Martkeyet Myisha Gaskin (James Barrs), Imani Gaskin (Heber Giagnacovo), Naima Bagot (Kevon Bagot), Ricky Gaskin, and Terell Gaskin, and a devoted grandfather to his cherished granddaughter, Keagan Hector, who lovingly knew him as “Papa.”
In addition to his wife, children, and granddaughter, Guy is survived by his only living aunt, Gloria Peoples, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and great nephews.
His lifelong friends, including Lawrence Givens and Napoleon “Buddy” and Shirley Smith, will remember him as the man who always had a story to tell (often with a sarcastic twist!), could give directions to nearly anywhere, even places he hadn’t visited in decades, and served as the keeper of the best jazz instrumentals. Those who knew Guy will remember his sense of humor, resilience, generosity, and easygoing spirit. He had a gift for making others feel that no problem was too big to solve and that even the toughest challenges could somehow work themselves out.
Rather than mourn his passing, Guy wished for his life to be celebrated. One of his favorite scriptures was Luke 10:2: “The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.”
His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the lessons he shared, and the love he gave so freely.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, August 31, 2025 at 11:00 am at the Believers Non-Denominational Church (15000 Bellaire Blvd, Houston, TX 77083).
