John Alex Covington “Johnny” passed away Friday February 12, 2021. He was a proud 92 year resident of Houston, Texas: born in the Heights, graduating from Reagan high school, and attending Rice University.
His early career was spent at Shell Oil in the pilot lab where he became the youngest supervisor ever at that time. HIs attention soon turned from crude oil to tamales as he owned and operated 2 of the earliest Monterey House restaurants serving up dinners and candy to loyal customers in Garden Oaks and Oak Forest. He also used his mechanical and organizational skills as Vice-president of Production at the Monterey House corporation.
Johnny was an ardent baseball fan, cheering on the Houston Buffaloes, Colt 45's, and his beloved Astros. In between games, he always made time to go fishing. Many cherished summers were spent at Port Isabel teaching children and grandchildren the art of catching “specs.”
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Willotta (Blair) Covington, his beloved daughter, Jean Marie Haseman (Billy), and grandson Jeffrey Mitchell. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Regina Covington, sons Stephen (Kim) and Daniel, and daughters Becky Mitchell, Janice Webster (Mike), Sharon Field (Tom), Mary Covington (Milind), Andy Whitten (Mike), and Julie Covington. He also leaves behind 15 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren who loved their Pawpaw.
Due to Covid, a private graveside service will be held for immediate family members. A memorial service celebrating his rich and full life will be held at a later date. The family request that no flowers be sent and, if you wish to honor his memory, please consider donating to a charity of your choice.
