Oh boy, so many sweet memories of Ramona! She was the kindest and most giving, with her talents, jokes, and encouraging words.

I met Ramona when she was just learning English, so living with her and communicating was a unique experience!

She was passionate about storytelling, my first live actress. She could imitate every Spanish accent. I learned patience and understanding her adorable Spanglish accent, and I enjoyed her accent imitations of Venezuelans, Cubans, and others.

She taught me makeup as she learned to become a Mary Kay consultant. I was her model, and she tried out her skills on me. A Pentecostal teenager’s dream! She wanted a pink Cadillac, and I lived the dream with her. I even sold Mary Kay for her when I was in college.

She was funny when she would call out for my brother, TRRREVORR. I watched how much she calmed his anxious nerves.
She made me blush when she talked about her “Brrown Sugar.”
I can still hear her voice calling his name.

She introduced me to Julio Iglesias and played his music all the time. I saw him perform live seven times because of her. When I left for Miami, I played his English release cassette tape so much till it broke. To this day, whenever I’m listening to his music, I think of Ramona.

She influenced me on how to love and nurture and mother my future kids because of how she raised her kids. I don’t think I will ever measure up to her. I wished I told her. She loved Tony and Amanda fiercely and was proud of them.

She repeated all the intelligent but naughty things Amanda said to me, like “I don’t love you! Go back to your house.” She’d tickle me when she called Daddy “Cocoa Payol.” She just loved saying that.

Tony is forever her firstborn eyeball, as we say. She was tickled that his heart was on his right side and made me feel it all the time. She reminded me of Mom and Trevor as a baby.

Another wonderful memory is when Ramona first met our family. She welcomed us all with open arms into her home, showing her kindness and love to both Mom and Dad. I imagine Mom is hugging her tightly in heaven, dancing with her because she loved and cherished Ramona so much.

As an aunt, my girls cherish the baby sweater she knitted and the special hummingbird necklace she made for Micaela’s 16th birthday. It’s interesting that, of all the gifts they’ve received over the years, those are the things I still have to “hold on” to for them.

Ramona made such a lasting impact on my life that it will stay with me forever. She wasn’t just beautiful on the outside; she was also the kindest, funniest, and strongest woman I know. Even with her health challenges, she always encouraged everyone with her words. I know she’s reunited with Mimas, her beloved mom, my Mom, and I bet they are dancing in heaven to parang, while Roy is waiting his turn. She’s teasing Daddy, her Coco Panyol. She’s chatting with Ann and patiently speaking Spanish with Juanchie. I miss her and love her!
