In Memory of
Clarence Simpson Adkins Jr. "Buster"
-

Clarence Simpson “Buster” Adkins, Jr. went to be with the Lord on March 5, 2011. He was born August 30, 1926 to Clarence Simpson Adkins, Sr. and Lucy Clothilde Wilder Adkins, both deceased. He was preceded in death by his brother Carol. He is survived by his wife, Lynn Rankin, sister Billie Adams, son Rick, wife Jan, daughter Ivy, husband Eric Rathgeber, son Court, wife Kimberly, son Brett, wife Kristen, grandchildren Jaime, Cassie, Sara, husband Chris Clugy, Whitney, Jordan Stone, Lila Stone, Danielle, Jared, and Angelica, great grandchildren Noah and Lily, step children Rosanne Walton, husband Greg, Joe Rankin, wife Robin, David Rankin, and Paula Rankin.

Buster was born at Martin near Coushatta, Louisiana and accepted Christ on June 10, 1940 at First Baptist Church. He attended Martin High School and graduated May 28, 1943. He immediately enrolled in Louisiana State University. On December 7, 1944, he reported to US Navy and was discharged in July 1946. He re-entered LSU and graduated May 27, 1950.

Upon graduation, he worked with International Harvester and later Commercial Credit Corporation. He met his wife, Shirley, at LSU and they were married July 21, 1951. He started as a roughneck with Shell Oil on a barge rig near Corpus Christi, Texas. They attended Morgan Street Baptist Church. Their first child, Rick, was born on August 29, 1952.

On August 23, 1953, Shell transferred Buster from Shell’s Marine Rig No.1 to Houston Area Production office and later to Houston Division Production Mechanical Engineering. They lived in an apartment at 1105 Bardwell until August 1955; then bought a house at 1703 Wilde Rock Way in Shepherd Forest in Northwest Houston. At first, they attended Second Baptist Church. Later they moved to South Main Baptist, became active and developed many life long friends. In 1960, they moved to Westbury and joined Willow Meadows Baptist Church where they developed many more friends. Buster was ordained a deacon in December 1960 and continued to be active in teaching and church leadership.

In the meantime, Buster graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering at University of Houston on June 3, 1960 and was promoted to Mechanical Engineer. They moved to 6222 Paisley in Maplewood South.

On June 10, 1971, Buster was transferred with Shell’s Houston Division to New Orleans. The family joined First Baptist Church led by Dr. J. D. Gray, the pastor. This move was not in the best interest for the family; however, they made the best of it. Buster became disenchanted with his career path and resigned from Shell on August 7, 1974. He accepted employment with Goldrus Drilling Co and Goldking Production. The family gladly accepted the new assignment, moved back to Houston and started over at Huntwick on 1960. They attended Champion Forest Baptist Church and joined Tallowood Baptist Church in July 1975.

Buster enjoyed the new assignment in turnkey drilling. This drilling environment presented challenges that inspired all company personnel to excel in their areas of expertise and service to their customers. His area of expertise was drilling operations.

He left Goldrus in 1980 for Moran Bros and later went to work at Mitchell Energy in the Woodlands. On May 31, 1992, he retired from Mitchell Energy
He accepted projects at Tallowood Baptist Church and continued his work in the nursing home ministry. His wife, Shirley, affected by memory loss, was confined to Silverado and passed away May 25, 2008. He continued working at Tallowood in the Senior Council, where he met and renewed his acquaintance with a family friend, Lynn Lloyd Rankin. They later married on March 29, 2009. They enjoyed their life together getting to know each other’s families again.

Buster and I crossed paths several times at Champion Forest Baptist Church, at Randalls Pharmacy where I watched him in his care for Shirley, and at Silverado when visiting. His robust positive Christian personality will be sorely missed.

I met Buster while working at Silverado. His wife Shirley resided at Silverado. Buster and I always chatted about us both being from Louisiana and our dads both graduating from LSU about the same time. Buster was a great person and truly Christian. He will be truly missed. God be with his family and our prayers are with you.

We have lost a friend and a fine neighbor. If we were out in the yard, Buster always stopped to talk when he was driving by. In the early 1990's Huntwick was hit with an icestorm. Our yard was particularly hard-hit. Buster stopped by to tell us that he was going to help, and he did. Ice and tree branches were piled up about 5 feet or so. He came over and spent the whole day helping. We have always appreciated so much what he did.
Our sincere sympathy to the family.

We met Buster at Silverado while his wife was a resident. One of my first memories is of him on their wedding anniversary proudly showing off two large framed wedding pictures of Shirley taken 56 years before. His face beamed as he talked about how beautiful she was. We admired how attentive Buster was to Shirley's needs. Eventually, Buster began to share with the Silverado residents during their weekly Bible study time and then later he led the weekly church service. My aunt, who is also a resident of Silverado, loved Buster and was always front and center when he was speaking. She often said, "I love my preacher. I think he's the best I've ever heard. He's even better than Billy Graham!" Buster became her friend and she adored him. He took time to visit with her whenever he came to speak. When she went to the hospital last year, Buster came several times to visit. My aunt has Alzheimer's and gets confused sometimes, but Buster always treated her as a "whole" person. He saw her as a human being worthy of respect, Alzheimer's and all. The past few years of her life have been much sweeter because of the compassion of a precious man named Buster. She loved him and we did, too. He was not only her friend, he became our friend, too. He will be missed.
