It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Sir Charles Dorgu on the 30th of September, 2024 at the age of 79. Born on November 15, 1944, in Iva Valley, Enugu State, Eastern Nigeria, he was the cherished son of Pa Paul Okon and Ma Beatrice Ijeoma, with roots in Agbere and Kwale in Sagbama Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, and [Local Government Area], Delta State.
Sir Charles grew up in the south eastern part of Nigeria, where he became fluent in both Igbo and efik languages, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of his upbringing. He was a man of humility and sophistication, known for his love of knowledge and engaging conversations that bridged generations, genders, and cultures. A strategic thinker and attentive listener, his integrity and tireless work ethic shone through as he rose each morning at 4 a.m. to pursue his dreams.
A devoted patriot, Sir Charles had a strong disdain for corruption, guided by the wise words of his father: “keep yourself fold, and watch how you go.” He instilled these values in his children, shaping their lives with wisdom that endures.
His impeccable sense of style, whether in traditional Etibo attire or tailored suits, reflected his grace and confidence. An enthusiast of nation building, politics, fashion, sports, and music, he found joy in the rhythms of King Robert Ebizimor and other Izon musical legends, as well as jazz, blues, country, and gospel. In his youth, he excelled in football and cherished playing chess, Obrige, and Corn hole with his grandchildren during visits to the United States.
In 1970, Sir Charles found the love of his life, Lady Gesiere Brisibe-Dorgu (née Brisibe). Their partnership flourished, creating a nurturing home filled with love and support for their accomplished children and a growing family of kind-hearted grandchildren. Together, they faced life's challenges with unwavering strength until his last moments.
As a devoted Catholic Knight and member of the Knights of the Order of Saint John (KSJ), Sir Charles dedicated his life to serving God and striving for personal excellence. Though health challenges kept him from attending services, his faith remained resolute.
Sir Charles Dorgu leaves behind a rich legacy of love, wisdom, and resilience that will continue to inspire all who knew him. He is survived by his beloved wife, children, grandchildren, and a multitude of family and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
May his gentle soul rest in eternal peace.
