It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Gladys Elsi Ramirez on March 21, 2026, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 95.
Gladys was born on November 2, 1930, in Chile to Ana Maria Ortiz and Lorenzo Castillo, the second of ten children. At age 16, she married the love of her life, Oscar Ramirez, an officer in the Chilean Air Force. They shared 27 years of marriage and had two children, Maricel and Nerin, before Oscar's passing in 1973.
Following his death, Gladys immigrated to the United States to live with her children in New Jersey. In 1985, the family moved to Houston, where they opened a Latin American family restaurant the following year. Gladys served as the dedicated full-time cashier until her retirement.
She is survived by her daughter, Maricel Ramirez Almeyda, and husband, David Almeyda; her grandsons, Samuel Almeyda and Oscar Ramirez; her siblings in Chile, Nilson, Hector, Juan, and Mirta Castillo; her goddaughter, Ingrid Pedraza; and

Nació el 2 de noviembre de 1930 en Chile, hija de Ana María Ortiz y Lorenzo Castillo, siendo la segunda de diez hermanos. A los 16 años contrajo matrimonio con Oscar Ramirez, oficial de la Fuerza Aérea de Chile, con quien compartió 27 años de vida hasta el fallecimiento de este en 1973. De esta unión nacieron sus dos hijos, Maricel y Nerin.
Seis meses después de enviudar, Gladys emigró a los Estados Unidos para residir con sus hijos en Nueva Jersey durante 12 años. En 1985, la familia se trasladó a Houston, donde al año siguiente fundaron un restaurante familiar latinoamericano en el suroeste de la ciudad. Gladys se desempeñó allí como cajera a tiempo completo hasta su jubilación.

Gladys fue una mujer virtuosa, llena de amor, entrega y bondad. Su vida dejó una huella hermosa en todos quienes la conocieron, y especialmente en su hija Maricel, quien fue una hija ejemplar, llena de cuidado, respeto y amor hacia su madre.
En medio de la tristeza, confiamos en que Dios es nuestro consuelo y refugio. Que Él abrace sus corazones, les dé paz en medio del dolor y fortalezca sus vidas cada día. La partida no es un adiós definitivo, sino una esperanza en Cristo, donde un día volveremos a encontrarnos.

Gladys was a beautiful soul in many lives. We remember her fondly whenever our family got together for dinners and special events. She was always so sweet to the children, but also taught them how to learn.
We are very blessed to have known her. It is sad that she is no longer with us, but also beautiful to know that she is in heaven with the Lord!
