Mary Ann (née Reeks) Graves

Mary Ann moved from life on Earth to be with the Lord on November 7, 2015. She was 85 years old.

Mary Ann was born on June 20, 1930 to Ernestine Landry Reeks and John Thaddeus Reeks of Shreveport, LA, where she was also raised. An alumna of Byrd High School, she attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, graduating in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts in English. While there, she and John W. Graves experienced a “Godsend” when they met one day while walking to class. They married in 1952 and celebrated their 63rd anniversary last April.

Throughout the years, Mary Ann had many interests. She held leadership positions in numerous organizations, including the local PTA, the North Highlands Women’s Club, and the Chi Omega Alums. A talented musician and songwriter, she enjoyed playing the guitar and piano, as well as singing in the church choir. In addition, she was very active in her church with the Daughters of the King, bible study groups, and the Alter Guild. She was also a Life Master in duplicate bridge.

Mary Ann will best be remembered for her love of her family and friends. She was always very giving of herself in support of others and loved to make people happy. Her grandkids will always remember the glorious days they spent at Hog Heaven—Mary Ann and Johnny’s house on Lake Livingston—as she worked tirelessly to ensure they had a wonderful visit.

Mary Ann is survived by her husband, Johnny; sister, Marjorie Reeks, of Houston, Tx; son, John Graves, and wife, Velma, of Dothan, AL; son, Paul Graves, and wife, Sharon, of West Chester, PA; and daughter, Elizabeth Gaspard, and husband, Greg, of Houston, TX; and grandchildren, Andrea, Erika, Adam, Wesley, Jordan, and Justin.

A celebration of her “promotion” will be held at their church of over 40 years, the Church of the Ascension Episcopal Church, 2525 Seagler, Houston, TX 77042 on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2015, at 11:00AM, with a viewing at 10:00AM. A reception will be held after the service in the Parish Hall.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to the Church of the Ascension.
