Mr. Johnson was born June 10, 1923 in Wichita Falls, Texas to Horace S. Johnson and Viola Johnson. He grew up in the panhandle area of Texas, where he attended grade school and high school. He was drafted into the Army February 23, 1943, and served in the 44th Infantry Division in various places in the United States, until he was sent to France in September 1944. He was wounded there and awarded the Purple Heart. He was discharged on his return to the U.S., having served two and a half years.
He married the former Maxine Price at Conway, Arkansas on December 22, 1945, after which he enrolled at Bethany Nazarene College (now Southern University), to prepare for the ministry in the Church of the Nazarene. After graduation, he pastored churches in Arkansas, Alaska and Houston, Texas. He worked for several years at the Arkansas Childrens Colony at Conway, Arkansas. After moving to Houston in about 1972, he was a faithful member of the Alief Church of the Nazarene for 30 years. He passed away on May 14, 2007 at the Westbury Place Nursing Home in Houston, Texas.
He is survived by his wife, Maxine, of 61 years; five children, Archie Wayne of Houston, Linda Donalson and husband Charles of Houston, David Johnson and wife Margo of St. Croix in the Virgin Islands, Mark Johnson and wife Debbie of Houston, and Rhonda Villa and husband Timothy of Tucson, Arizona. He was blessed with twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by a sister, Mary Luther and husband Tom of Amarillo, Georgia Jarrett of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and sister Juanita Bowie and husband Ray of Arizona.
He was much loved by his family and friends.
