In Memory of
John Carter Mayfield III
-

John Carter Mayfield III, 82, passed away on August 18th in Houston, TX. A man of deep creativity, quick wit with an unmatched gift for storytelling, “Johnny” left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.

Born and raised with a lifelong love for the Mayfield Family Ranch in Juno, Texas, Johnny proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He carried the weight of that service throughout his life as a disabled veteran and channeled his experiences into his expression as a writer and artist. His writing credits include episodes of the TV series Private Benjamin. He was also proud to have helped his father open and run the Mayfield Country Store, a place that held a special part in his heart.

After graduating from San Angelo State University, Johnny worked as a licensed stockbroker. He also attended the University of Texas, Austin, and remained an avid Longhorns fan as well as a dedicated fan of the Dallas Cowboys.

Johnny was known for his interest in philosophy and poetry and his talent for making others laugh with a good (maybe true) story. He enjoyed spending time in Mexico and spoke fluent Spanish. He also had a soft spot for animals — he could always be found feeding a rotating cast of stray cats who knew a source of love (and a free meal) when they found him.

Johnny is survived by his beloved wife, Janet Irene Mayfield; his daughter Savannah Mayfield Roberson and her husband William Roberson, and their sons Liam Roberson and Caleb Reid; his son Lee Mayfield and partner Margaret Bryant, and their daughters Rosemary and Eleanor; his daughter Shara Morlock and husband Thomas Morlock, and their sons Maximillian and Leon; and granddaughter Selah Mayfield Price. He is also survived by his siblings Grace Mayfield Brooks, William Travis “W.T.” Mayfield, Scott Mayfield and their families.

He was preceded in death by his son, Elvis Woodrow Mayfield, father of Selah; his parents; and his nephew, Robert Scott Mayfield, Jr.

Johnny will be laid to rest with military honors on Monday, August 24th, at 9:15 AM at Houston National Cemetery.
