In Memory of
Donald Lee Mueller
-

Don was born in Covington, Kentucky in 1942, to Russell Valentine and Lillian Myrtle Mueller. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree with honors in chemical engineering in 1965 from the University of Cincinnati and pursued a career in petroleum engineering over the next two decades, followed by his role as Chief Financial Officer at Medical Income Concepts, Inc. in Houston, Texas.

In 1994 Don married Barbara Bowling May on the magical island of Anguilla. They traveled to many of the Caribbean islands. Seven Mile Beach in Grand Cayman was a favorite where they vacationed many summers, enjoying the people, the food, the culture and the peaceful beauty of the setting.

Don had a lifelong passion for travel and photography and published 19 books of his photography focusing on subjects important to him: Christianity, spirituality, the outdoors, the Astros and family and much more. He was very active in his local community with Second Baptist Church and The Brookwood Community and rescuing animals, including his buddy Sam the cat.

Don is preceded in death by his father and mother and survived by his stepbrother, Don Whitis, his son Donald Stephen and his partner, daughter Sarah Elizabeth, and the mother of his children Doris Bray Baker.

He is lovingly survived by his wife Barbara and her children, Kim Strickler and husband David, Kelli Hernandez and husband Adrian and Kate Chapple and husband David. Last but by no means least he is a proud grandfather, known as Grump, to Matt and Josh Hernandez, Lindsey, Cline and Colton Strickler.

Don’s final wishes included no memorial service but rather to be remembered as son/brother/husband/father/grandfather/friend.
Praise be to God, our father, for loving us with peace and grace.

I'm thankful every day for the childhood you provided me. The season of my life with the most beautiful memories was blessed to me because I got to be your daughter. I remember every Birthday and the bouquet of flowers that would be delivered, the magic of Christmas you gifted our home during the holidays and the fun-filled vacations to Colorado, Mexico and Caribbean. You put up with me rescuing the neighborhood stray cats as I loved DC, Half-pint, Pirate, and Ace so much. The precious dog, Rags, you brought home from the Houston SPCA became your best furry friend. I have so many priceless memories that I hold in my heart. Shine bright among the stars, Dad. You are loved. Psalm 46:10. 🤍✨

Don was clearly one of the best men I have ever known in my life. He was fair. He was intelligent. He cared about people. I am so sorry he is no longer with us.

We first met Don on a baseball field where he was coaching special need kids. What a wonderful man - so patient and kind and giving of his time. That was back in the 1980’s. Through the years our friendship with Barbara and Don grew. Don had a keen creative eye and his photographs were exceptional - how we looked forward to their annual Christmas card! We will miss him dearly and know that he has already enriched Heaven with his God given talents. Our blessings to his family, especially the lovely Barbara. Melinda and Wayne Rose snd family

Even though Don and I did not hang out together I considered him a very good friend. He was a very likable guy. I really enjoyed being around him. The best memory I have of him was the night I spent with him in the hospital so Barbara could go home and get some rest. Nothing out if the ordinary just guy talk. But I felt I got to know him. One thing for sure, he loved the Lord. I will miss him. What a great guy he was.

I was playing music for a party at work and Mr. Don inquired about the artist. I told him it was Pitbull. I can't recall the song, but it became Mr. Don's favorite. We would fantasize about riding on fancy Yachts and listening to Pitbull.

Among many of his amazing gifts, including his deep love and dedication to my dear friend Barbara, I am so grateful for Don's stunning photography/art and his writings. In my experience, Don was a dedicated observer of life and love. That he spent hours volunteering with individuals with disabilities is especially notable as not everyone has the capacity to give as he did. Don's lives loudly in my memory!

Love and Joy - Is what I felt every time Ii was with Don. Barbara and Don embraced life and their loved ones with remarkable enthusiasm. Their love for God was unbending and they shared their faith with many.
The highlight of my week was walking into Bible Study and seeing Don We shared a lot love, laughs and candy. One of the most memorable times together was converting one of his remarkable photos to a large production on my wall. How i loved Don and love Barbara.

My absolute favorite memory of Don is when he and Babs renewed their wedding vowels. Can’t explain it but you could just feel the deep love and commitment in the air. Truly an incredible experience. He was loved and will be missed by so many.

As Don's dentist, I was tasked with Don's special and difficult dental needs. Despite his very challenging circumstances, Don was always upbeat and cheerful about his situation. He was able to get the most out of a less than perfect dental scenario. I was always impressed with his extremely observant photographic eye. His photos were peaceful and compelling. They always had a message hidden somewhere in the picutre. Don always made my day a little better for having seen him in my office.

My favorite memories were made with Grumps when we lived a few doors down from each other and I could see him as often as I’d like. I remember doing puzzles and nurturing butterflies with the both of y’all every weekend in the spring. I’ll miss him for all of the positivity he spread even in the midst of a terrible situation, for the humor and light he brought to every room he entered, and for the love and care he would always show no matter how he felt. I’ll miss you more than you know.

I was blessed to know Don the last 6 years of his life through his volunteer work at The Brookwood Community Studio on Grand Parkway. We bonded over the citizens who he adored, AND Astros baseball. He was a renaissance man for the ages, and knew so much about so many subjects. Don was never showy about his keen intellect…he was quietly wise. The citizens called him Grandpa, and they looked forward to seeing him each Thursday when he came to do whatever was needed at our studio. Sometimes he came on weekends to water plants in the hot summers. Other times he helped us by smoothing out the surfaces and edges of our clay products in their fragile greenware state before they went to the kiln. My favorite memory of Don was helping him plan a surprise birthday lunch for his beloved Barb with our Brookwood citizens at Lopez Restaurant in the Gallery Furniture building. It was March 2020, and a wonderful time for everyone. I treasure that, as the very next day the world shut down for an unprecedented time. When we finally returned to the Studio, Don came back too, and continued to volunteer as long as his strength allowed him to. Don made a lasting positive impact on countless lives, and he will always be celebrated as a kind, caring funny, wise and gentle man. Don was a humble and faithful servant of the Lord. I can picture “Second Base” (a nickname the late great Jim Valvano gave Don in their younger days) sitting beside God chatting about baseball and college sports. I may ask you to put in a good word for our Astros next year! Fly high, my friend! Your love here on earth endures.
