In Memory of
Richard Thomas Kirst Jr.
-

Richard Thomas Kirst, Jr. is an amazing person. He was born in Lebanon, PA on October 9, 1950, one of nine children. Raised Catholic, he sincerely wanted to serve God and entered the Seminary to become a priest, but there was much with which he didn’t agree. He left to enter a new mission, the Air Force. While stationed in England repairing jet aircrafts, he met his wife Patsy Kyong. Upon returning to the US, he soon met his spiritual mother, Mrs. Toshiko Sato. He and Patsy joined the church together in July 1974. She was pregnant with their first son, Jonathan.

Richard was a man of impeccable integrity with a heart of absolute devotion to God and True Parents, no matter how difficult the course or the cost to him personally. And the cost was great. Circumstances caused his wife to separate from him and Richard became a single parent, raising Jonathan alone, having to leave him in the care of others while he worked.

Richard’s heart was always on the altar before God. He could have been Noah working on the Arc, so singular was his devotion while working on his missions: IOWC, the Boulder Center, MFT, Saeilo Machinery, and various seafood enterprises. Richard had an undying determination to serve and save the people of Bulgaria, his mission country.

In the October 1982 6000 couple Blessing, Richard married Atsuko Fujitsuka, a Kodiak- mission sister. They have two daughters -- Estelle and Hannah. Richard raised his children with incredible love, and the highest standard of conduct. All three of his children are remarkable individuals. His wife is a paragon of faith.

Richard's stubbornness nearly cost him his life. The first time he acquired cancer, it was his persistent boss, the president of the company, who drove Richard to the doctor where they discovered a huge tumor. The doctor said “one day later and Richard would have died”. He battled with that cancer for over a year bringing it to a stage thought to be of total remission, but that was not so. This recent battle was the 2nd relapse of cancer for Richard.

In the workplace, Richard was known for working long hours, even on Saturdays, and often took on extra projects to help maintain the business. He was rock-of-Gibraltar solid, and ornery as hell, but never vindictive or mean. He just wouldn’t back down if he thought something was right. He neglected himself while he pushed forward toward the success of whatever endeavor he undertook.

He is survived by his wife Atsuko, his son Jonathan (wife Mina), and his daughters Estelle (husband Marten Hernandez) and Hannah Kirst.

Visitation and his Ascension Memorial Service will be held at Will of God Family Church, 14556 Almeda Road, Houston, TX 77053-3805. Visitation from 1-3pm and the Memorial Service from 3-5pm this Sunday, March 27.

His burial will be with full Air Force honors at the Houston National Cemetery located at 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive Houston, TX 77038 on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at 1:15pm sharp.

Cards, letters and offerings of support are appreciated and can be sent to his wife Atsuko Kirst at 1701 Upland Drive, Apt 165, Houston, TX 77043.

Richard Kirst was a very honorable man. He was always very straightforward in all of his dealings. He was honest and would not mislead his customers even if it meant walking away from a sale. He was very meticulous in his dealings with customers as he represented his product and his company.
Richard always spoke the truth in a very direct manner leaving no question of his position.
Richard will be missed by many.

Richard Thomas Kirst

I've known Richard since the early 80's, my wife has known him even longer, and whether you met him 30 years ago or just this year, he has always been the same man.

These last 16 years we have worked together at Japan Machine Tools, and I clearly remember him asking me during the time I was trying to recruit him, “George, do you really want to hire me? You know I am not the greatest salesman, I must be the last one on your list of possibilities.” Richard always was right to the point. He wasn't the best salesman, but he was the best man I knew, and he had more skills than most of us.

His contributions to JMT went far beyond sales, and I bet it will take several men to fill all of the voids his absence will leave.

I would like to share with you a little personal experience. One time I tried to give Richard part of my commission on a sale, because he had worked with this particular customer through another dealer years ago. He refused it, and proceeded with an extended explanation as to why he was not accepting my offer. Some of you may have been beneficiaries of one or more of Richard's speeches. Even our suppliers and customers know what I am talking about. Family, friends and colleagues, I am sure you can all relate.

Well, being the slow learner I am, I tried another approach, not related to business, but from the heart, and I truly meant it. I told Richard I didn't have a good purpose for the money, and that if I had, I would have already used the money and wouldn't be there offering it to him. I then said that I knew he had a better use for the money than I did and that is why he should have it and not me. He accepted the gift at this point. And I learned a valuable lesson.

Richard has even told me that he argues with God, and he has more than a few questions for the Almighty.

Richard's honesty, integrity and resoluteness are beyond compare. Many times I have thought that if I were in a tough situation, even a life and death situation, he is the one man I would choose to be by my side. He is truly a man who exemplifies living for the sake of others.

Richard is one of my best friends, an always reliable colleague, and although we were born from different parents, he will always be my brother.

My dearest Brother, who throughout my life, provided me challenges and laughter. I will truly miss him.

Tom always had the thought that nothing was impossible, and that if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything. He truly loved family, and always said to me family is what counts.

Love to you Tom...... Your little sister.

My life has been blessed to have known Richard and his family for the past 5 years. His love and faith in God and The True Parents have been absolute, and unchanging. after he recovered from the first bout with cancer that almost took his life, he said to me with absolute seriousness and peace "If God needs my life i am more than ready to go home"
He was fearless, and had a quiet strength that was like a rock. He said very little, but the words he spoke to me were always deep and carried great depth. Actually i was a little afraid to ask deep questions to him, as my elder brother because he never gave simple answers, and always challenged me in my own life of faith. He will be missed greatly, but he has a beautiful family that will carry on his faith and love, that he can live with them in heart. God speed Richard
