In Memory of
Steven Fletcher Hovater

Steven Fletcher "Steve" Hovater “Opa”, 71, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 26, 2024 in Houston, Texas.  He was born on December 12, 1952 in Houston, Texas to Amos Claude Hovater and Mary Ann Hovater.

He attended Memorial High School and was a graduate of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Upon graduating he joined his dad in the family business building new homes. He was an inventor of a specialized oilfield valve that was used across the world for many years in oil field drilling. After many years building he transitioned to IT support for area churches. He retired as an IT Director to travel in his new RV around the Texas Hill Country for bike rides, river trips, and hunting expeditions at exotic game ranches; he was always up for an adventure. He had a passion for working with his hands and always had a “project” happening at home. He always enjoyed time with family, teaching each of his kids to water ski and have the same love of the water as him. He loved long distance bike riding with all of his kids, participating multiple years in the MS 150, pushing himself every year. He loved fast cars, and could operate, drive, or fly almost anything. He loved his Alabama Football and weekends making BBQ. He loved every opportunity to attend and support his grandchildren at dance and baseball events and was always proud of their achievements.

“Opa” was an amazing Dad and grandfather. Remembered by many as always being kindhearted and quite witty. Keeping everyone on their toes and lighting up the room with his stories and funny antics.

He is survived by his 4 children, Louanne Hovater, Sean Hovater, Christopher Hovater, and Seth Hovater; and 2 grandchildren, Ava Grace Merritt, Luke Merritt, and niece and nephew Rachael Hovater and Jeff Johnson.

He is preceded in death by parents, and sister, Rhonda Hovater.

Graveside service will be on Thursday, May 2, 2024 at 11 AM at Carmen Nelson Bostick Historic Cemetery (12317 Holderrieth Rd. Tomball, TX 77375).
